UFC: Petr Yan takes shot at ‘paper champ’ Aljamain Sterling – ‘done celebrating yet?’

  • ‘Glad to see the champ is fine now,’ says Yan sarcastically, after pictures emerge of Sterling celebrating winning title on a DQ
  • ‘Because you are too stupid to know the rules I have to start training again for a rematch,’ blasts Sterling

Petr Yan apologised to Aljamain Sterling on social media after his illegal strike in their bantamweight title bout at UFC 259, but things soon turned ugly between the pair.

“No Mercy” (15-2) lost the title on a DQ after kneeing Sterling (20-3) in the head while he was grounded in the fourth round on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

“I apologise and wish speedy recovery to @funkmasterMMA I didn’t mean to throw an illegal strike, I just made a big mistake and paid for it,” Yan tweeted after the fight. In his post-fight interview, he also called for a rematch once “Funkmaster” had healed up.

A picture then posted by Sterling’s training partner Merab Dvalishvili alongside the new champ, who was holding the belt, riled the Russian, however.

“Glad to see the champ is fine now …” posted Yan.
