UFC: Derek Brunson claims Paulo Costa ducked him, mocks wine excuse – ‘he could’ve said he was drugged’
- Brunson says fellow UFC middleweight contender blaming Adesanya loss on hangover an ‘all-time’ excuse
- ‘He could’ve made up something better than that … you’re whining, stop it’

Paulo Costa certainly caused a stir when he recently blamed his defeat by Israel Adesanya on having a hangover from drinking a bottle of wine the night before their UFC 253 main event last September.
Middleweight champion Adesanya (20-1) picked apart the Brazilian for a second-round TKO before ruthlessly mocking his opponent in the Octagon – and on social media for weeks after the fight.
“Sober Costa is still undefeated,” tweeted “Borrachinha” (13-1) this month, but his fellow middleweight contender Derek Brunson is having none of it
“Yeah, that was an all-time excuse, I don’t know what Costa was thinking on that,” Brunson told SCMP MMA. “He could have made up something better than that.
“Say somebody drugged him. Say he’s a partier. Say some girl date-raped him. I don’t know, say something, bro. But just you self-inflicting drinking wine … I don’t know how believable that is.”
