Zhang Weili’s singular focus on the fight game has become the stuff of legend, but the UFC strawweight champion has admitted there have been times when she was distracted – and even disturbed – by the trolls who shadow social media.

Not any more.

China’s first UFC champion said those who had questioned her abilities over the past few years had only served to make her try harder.

“Sometimes, I have seen many people saying they don’t support me on online platforms. But after reading these posts, I feel more motivated,” Zhang said.

“I feel I should work harder in my training to make them feel disappointed. I have to make those who don’t support me feel disappointed and those who support me feel more confident in me. So I feel it won’t affect my psychological state. No matter where I am, I just have to set my mentality right, then it will be OK.”
