Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza suffered a gruesome arm break at the hands of Andre Muniz on Saturday night’s UFC 262 prelims in Houston, Texas.
The 31-year-old “Sergipano” (21-4) took a first-round submission victory via inverted arm bar in their middleweight bout, after his fellow Brazilian’s right arm audibly snapped at the Toyota Centre.
Muniz quickly let go of his opponent’s arm after hearing it snap. Souza (26-10, one no contest) stood up and was not writhing in pain, but was unable to move the arm, with replays at the arena drawing loud gasps from the crowd.
“Yeah, I heard it snap. I let go not only out of respect, but with jiu jitsu, I knew it could hurt even more if I didn’t let go,” Muniz said via a translator in his post-fight interview in the Octagon.
“That’s a position I do a lot. I transition for the arm bar triangle. When I saw his arm was trapped, I went for it and I got the submission, thank God. Jacare, I’m a fan of him since I was a kid. He’s my idol. I hope he’s good.”
