UFC: Rob Font ‘would love to go straight to the belt’ after clinic against Cody Garbrandt
- No 3-ranked American boasts of ‘best jab in the UFC’ following unanimous decision over former champ
- ‘Aljamain [Sterling] might be a little tougher puzzle to solve. Petr Yan is similar to Cody – stay long, and let him run into something big,’ Font says
Rob Font has well and truly arrived in the UFC.
The No 3-ranked bantamweight (12-4) announced himself as a player in the title picture with a boxing masterclass in Saturday night’s UFC Vegas 27 main event, earning a unanimous decision over Cody Garbrandt (12-4).
The 33-year-old American, fighting out of New England Cartel, made it four wins in a row and landed another huge feather in his cap by taking out the former champion, having also finished former challenger Marlon Moraes last December.
“I’ll be patient, we gotta see how the championship fight plays out,” Font told Paul Felder in his post-fight interview, in reference to a potential rematch between champion Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan. “Cory [Sandhagen] and TJ [Dillashaw] are fighting, I wanna get in between those two guys there. The winner of the TJ fight, or I would love to get straight to the belt.”
“I think Aljamain might be a little tougher puzzle to solve,” Font added at the post-event press conference. “Petr Yan is similar to Cody – stay long, long jab, and let him run into something big. Aljamain’s a little trickier because of the wrestling and his length.”
Font went back to his jab every time he landed a power shot, and tied for the highest significant strike differential (180 to 52) in a bantamweight fight in the promotion.
