Bibiano Fernandes has said he feels his absence from Demetrious Johnson’s training camp contributed to “Mighty Mouse” losing to ONE Championship flyweight king Adriano Moraes. The American former UFC champ suffered a second-round TKO defeat at ONE on TNT I in April, getting knocked out for the first time in his career at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. But ONE bantamweight champion Fernandes believes he can help his training partner Johnson solve the puzzle presented by his fellow Brazilian Moraes in a rematch. “I don’t think there will be a rematch right now because it was a very clean loss, second round,” Fernandes told SCMP MMA. “But I’ll tell you something, every time when I wasn’t training together with DJ, he lost. Every time I wasn’t helping in his camp, he lost. “First he lost to Henry Cejudo, now he lost to Moraes. The two reasons, first I was busy I was in Brazil, this one because of the coronavirus I couldn’t help in his camp. “Because the fighting game, it’s not about the competition, it’s not about the skill, the big one is the mindset. If the mindset is not there, you cannot perform as you might. You can be in the best shape but you have to find a way to win the fight. You can be as good as you can be, but if the mindset is not there, you will lose.” Bibiano blasts ONE Championship for ‘putting me on hold for two years’ Vancouver, based Fernandes has trained together with Johnson for years at AMC Pankration under coach Matt Hume, who is also vice-president of operations at Singapore-based ONE. “You know he’s my brother, I like the boy. I really like DJ,” 41-year-old Fernandes said. “If I can help for his camp, one hundred per cent I will be there. Because he’s a good kid. Since the beginning, I told him to come and fight for ONE Championship. “I can help him for sure. I have no problem to help him. He asked me what’s wrong in my fight, I said nothing was wrong in your fight. It was before your fight, everything before – you don’t have a good push, you don’t have a good training partner. “I was the guy training with you for a long time. I help you, and I was not there to help put his time, you were there yourself. That was the problem. “I don’t say he can beat [Moraes in a rematch], but I will say for sure you’re gonna see a different fight, because I’m stronger, I’m quicker, I’m longer. He will find another way to fight Adriano. “It’s the mentality in the training, the push in the training that makes a difference for the fight camp. If you have nobody to push you for your fight, it’s very difficult.” In the immediate aftermath of his loss to Moraes, Johnson discussed a potential kick-boxing fight for his next move, but “The Flash” has advised him against it. “I think he has to go fight MMA,” Fernandes said. “If you want to kick-box go kick-box, but it my honest opinion, as his friend, I would say take your time, enjoy your family, go back fight again, if you want to fight. If you don’t want to fight, retire, do whatever you want. “Go MMA, stay there, don’t give up because you lose. You have to keep moving forward. Mixed martial arts is like you win today, you lose tomorrow, but you have to find a way to win the fight.”
