South Korea’s Kang Ji-won is set for a high-stakes fight with Brazilian submission specialist Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida. The two heavyweights will meet in the ONE Championship Circle at the ONE: Winter Warriors event in Singapore on December 3, the promotion confirmed on Thursday. “Mighty Warrior” Kang, 26, burst into the MMA limelight with a pair of sizzling knockout victories over Mehdi Barghi and Amir Aliakbari under the ONE Championship banner this year. The two wins pushed Kang’s record to 5-0 overall. All of his victories have come by way of knockout – and all in the first round. ONE: Stamp Fairtex believes Bi Nguyen showed how to beat Ritu Phogat Despite his momentum, Kang will have his hands full with Buchecha, who is widely considered one of the greatest submission grapplers. The 30-year-old Brazilian, who trains alongside former UFC champions Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez at American Kickboxing Academy in California, has 13 Brazilian jiu-jitsu world championships in his trophy case, and made a splash in his MMA debut, submitting kick-boxing specialist Anderson “Braddock” Silva with a first-round north south choke. Kang and Buchecha were briefly linked to a fight at ONE on TNT 2 in April of this year, but the contest did not come to fruition. When it finally does at the event in Singapore, both men will be looking to assert themselves in the wide-open heavyweight division. The division had been ruled for many years by Filipino-American Brandon Vera. Yet Vera’s reign came to a skittering halt earlier this year when he was thumped to a second-round TKO by Indian Canadian wrestler Arjan Bhullar (11-1). Bhullar is still awaiting his first challenger, but has yet to face many of ONE’s top heavyweights, meaning the division is rife with compelling championship match ups. Kang and Buchecha would both make interesting challenges for the new champion and could conceivably set themselves up for a title eliminator or even a title shot with an impressive win on December 3. In addition to this riveting heavyweight style clash, ONE: Winter Warriors is expected to feature an anticipated showdown between Thai striker Stamp Fairtex and Indian wrestler Ritu Phogat. The bout will serve as the final of ONE‘s entertaining atomweight Grand Prix, and the winner will earn a crack at reigning atomweight queen Angela Lee, who will soon be returning from the birth of her first child. The ONE: Winter Warriors card will be topped by a lightweight kick-boxing title fight between champion Regian Eersel and challenger Islam Murtazaev.
