UFC: South Korea’s Da-un Jung obliterates Kennedy Nzechukwu in Las Vegas
- South Korea’s Da-un Jung kicked off UFC Fight Night 197 in Las Vegas with a vicious first-round knockout of Kennedy Nzechukwu
- In victory, the South Korean light heavyweight remains unbeaten in the UFC

South Korean light heavyweight Da-un Jung kicked off Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 197 card in Las Vegas in style, smashing his Nigerian American foe Kennedy Nzechukwu to a first-round knockout win.
Jung and Nzechukwu started slowly, but the South Korean was quick to crank up his offence, attacking his foe with a procession of elbows. Nzechukwu kept his guard up, but the constant impact appeared to bother him and Jung kept hacking away.
Before long, the South Korean had smashed through his opponent’s guard completely. From there, it was just a matter of time. Nzechukwu was unconscious by the 3:04 mark of the opening round.
“His reach was actually a little bit longer than mine,” Jung said. “For this game plan, we actually anticipated him throwing his jab a lot, but once we got in the cage, for whatever reason, he felt a little slow, a little flat-footed, and he wasn’t using his jab, so I decided to grab his lead hand and work my own jab. I saw the damage kind of adding up and that led to the elbow.”
In victory, Jung (15-2-1) remains unbeaten in the UFC. Since signing with the Las Vegas-based promotion in 2019, the 27-year-old has rattled off victories over Khadis Ibragimov, Mike Rodriguez, William Knight and Nzechukwu – though those victories were interspersed by a draw with experienced veteran Sam Alvey in October, 2020.
His last defeats came against the more experienced Jun Soo Lim and Roque Martinez in his second and third professional fights, both in 2015.
Jung’s unbeaten run in the perilous light-heavyweight division has cemented his status as one of South Korea’s top fighters.
