UFC: Joe Rogan reacts to ‘super jacked’ Conor McGregor’s muscle gain, and jokes ‘Usada’s gonna visit him soon’

  • UFC commentator questions how long Irishman’s broken leg will take to fully heal, and pontificates on former champ’s recent struggles
  • Rogan says ‘a tonne of money happened’ to McGregor – ‘it’s hard to wake up and go running when you’re sleeping in silk sheets’

UFC commentator Joe Rogan has weighed in on “super jacked” Conor McGregor’s recent muscle gain, and why he thinks the former two-weight champion has largely struggled in the Octagon since his crowning glory five years ago.

Rogan and his guests Ari Shaffir and Tony Hinchcliffe had been analysing McGregor’s historic featherweight and lightweight title wins against Jose Aldo in December 2015, and Eddie Alvarez a year later, on the latest episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

Shaffir then asked Rogan “what happened to [McGregor]” with the Irishman having since lost three of his last four fights in the Octagon, following a defeat in a money-spinning boxing match with American superstar Floyd Mayweather.

“Fights happened to him,” Rogan said. “And then also a s*** tonne of money, and then also some time out of the game when he was doing the Floyd Mayweather thing.

“I’m sure just doing boxing … If you’re gonna train for a giant US$100 million fight, you’re most likely not going to do any MMA sparring or anything. He probably just did that for a while.

“And then you get that money. What’s that Marvin Hagler quote about [how] ‘it’s hard to get up at five in the morning and go running when you’re sleeping in silk sheets’. I think that’s the phrase.”

Rogan and his fellow stand-up comedians then reacted to recent pictures of an increasingly muscle-bound McGregor, which have gone viral on social media.

The 33-year-old “Notorious” (22-6), who has also fought at welterweight, has been hitting the gym as he recovers from a broken leg suffered in a July defeat by Dustin Poirier.

“That’s him now. He’s super jacked. Usada’s [United States Anti-Doping Agency] gonna take a visit to him very soon,” Rogan said, jokingly.

“It’s a weird picture. He’s definitely jacked but it looks to me like he’s in the middle of lifting. If you see a guy’s body in the middle of lifting, it’s a little deceptive. These body builders that go on stage before the big Mr Olympia things, they all get pumped.

“He’s still jacked, he still looks great. He looks good, looks fit. Looks like he’s walking around on that shin. I wonder what percentage healed it is?

“You’ve got to wonder if a bone breaks in half like that and you’ve got a bone to hold it in place and all these screws, that’s gotta take a while.”
