Jon Jones was not impressed with what he saw in the UFC 270 main event. The card, which went down on Saturday night in Anaheim, California, was topped by a heavyweight title fight between undisputed champion Francis Ngannou and interim champion Ciryl Gane. Ngannou (17-3), known as the most ferocious knockout artist in MMA today, won by unanimous decision, surprising many onlookers with a wrestling-heavy game plan. Jones (26-1-0), however, was left questioning the skill of both fighters after their five-round championship bout concluded. The former UFC light heavyweight champion, who has long been teasing a move up to the heavyweight division, reacted to the fight on Twitter early on Sunday morning. “If this is the apex of heavyweight fighting, I’m excited about it,” he wrote in a series of tweets. “Got some more records to break. “I love how everyone gets so impressed with the new guy.” In a tweet that was quickly deleted – as has become Jones’ custom – Jones added “at the end of the day I’m {expletive] both guys up”. Jones is widely considered the greatest fighter in MMA history. He earned that reputation in the light heavyweight division, where he defended the championship 11 times. He vacated the division’s throne after a close February 2020 decision victory over Dominick Reyes, ostensibly with plans to move up to heavyweight. Nearly two years removed from his victory over Reyes, Jones has yet to return to the cage – let alone debut at heavyweight. That is due in part to a contract dispute with the UFC, and in part to ongoing legal issues outside the Octagon. It remains to be seen if the light heavyweight great will ever fight again. If his Tweets after UFC 270 were any indication, he is at least considering hanging up the gloves. “Lol [expletive] I may just enjoy retirement,” he wrote. At Sunday morning’s post-event press conference, Ngannou was asked about potentially fighting Jones next – presuming if both men can sort out their contract disputes with the UFC. “I was worked up for the Jon Jones fight last time,” Ngannou said. “It seems the winner of me and Stipe [Miocic] would fight him. “But I won that fight and I never heard about it. At this point I don’t know about it, what’s on the table.”
