ONE Championship: Jarred Brooks says Joshua Pacio ‘should be afraid’, calls for title shot after dominating Hiroba Minowa at Only The Brave

  • ‘The Monkey God’ calls calls out Filipino strawweight champion following unanimous decision win on Friday night in Singapore
  • ‘You better be ready. I’ll bend you over my knee, just like I did with Minowa. Nobody’s gonna beat me in this division,’ Brooks says

Jarred Brooks called out ONE Championship strawweight king Joshua Pacio after a dominant unanimous decision win at Friday night’s Only The Brave card in Singapore.

“The Monkey God” (18-2) was in control from wire to wire, setting up some beautiful takedowns with some crisp striking, and hunting for the finish for the whole 15 minutes.

The 28-year-old American is in a prime position to challenge “The Passion” for the belt, with No 2 Yosuke Saruta having lost twice to the Filipino, and No 1 Bokang Masunyane’s status unknown.

“Daddy’s home, Joshua Pacio,” No 3-ranked Brooks screamed into the mic in his post-fight interview with commentator Mitch Chilson at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“You better be ready. I’ll bend you right over my knee, just like I did with Minowa. Nobody’s gonna beat me in this division – not Bokang, not you. I’m coming for this whole division, flyweight too, baby.”

Former UFC star Brooks, who submitted Pacio’s teammate Lito Adiwang with a second-round arm triangle choke in November, has made a quick splash in Asian martial arts promotion ONE.

Despite another impressive showing, Brooks did not snag a US$50,000 performance bonus, but he later insisted he is a “company man” and called on ONE chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong to get behind him, and book the title fight for March 26’s ONE: X double header in Singapore.

“If Chatri, if Rich [Franklin], if Matt [Hume], all these guys want me to fight in March I would be more than happy to,” he said. “I’m looking to get a lot of cash and get some belts. I want to spring myself into this promotion as much as possible.

“I did a lot of promotional things that a lot of other fighters didn’t do this week, to put ONE on the map and put myself on the map as well. I’m willing to grow with this company as much a possible and do whatever they want me to do to satisfy the needs of the fans and the promotion and myself.”

Pacio seemed to get wind of Brooks’ comments in the Circle, writing in a Facebook post: “They’ve seen nothing yet. This is my division.”

The Post put Pacio’s words to Brooks in a virtual media scrum after the fight. “I know Josh has got better and he’s probably watching lot of video on me, but I think Joshua deep down inside is s******* himself.

“I don’t think he wants to fight me any time really soon. He probably wants to fight me in July or something like that. He can take as much time as he wants to prepare. But I think I can beat Joshua Pacio right now.”

“He knows why he should be afraid,”the American added. “He’s never fought another person like me inside the Circle. I know Josh has been watching me ever since I beat Lito, ever since I was in the UFC, so yeah, he should be worried. My tool belt is a little bit heftier than his for sure.

“If he isn’t ready to fight me, then why be the champ? You should be ready right now. I know the Filipinos love Joshua and Lito, and they wanna make excuses how Lito got beat and stuff like that, ‘Oh, it was a fake groin thing or whatever’.

“But I beat Lito at least 7 to 8 minutes out of that fight. He hit me one time, I think. It’s a bunch of excuses. I can’t stipulate to why Joshua wouldn’t fight me, I think he wants the smoke, so Joshua Pacio, let’s get it baby.”

Brooks started in fine fashion, hitting Minowa with a flurry from the off and rattling his jaw.

He then showed some nasty ground and pound, cutting Minowa’s head open with the Japanese fighter caught in a guillotine at the end of the first round, only to be saved by the bell.

“We’re not gonna lose it here, feel it, this is not the end,” Minowa’s corner told him before the third round. But there was nothing he could do.

Brooks just took him down immediately in the third round, picked him up again and body slammed him onto his back.

An accidental groin shot with 20 seconds to go added some late drama to proceedings. But Minowa opted to continue, throwing two flying knees as he went for broke.

Brooks was wise to them, though, and saw out the win – though he was critical of his performance when he spoke to the media.

Jarred Brooks celebrates beating Hiroba Minowa.

“I’m looking to beat people with a stamp,” he said. “I want to beat Joshua Pacio with a stamp. I’m gonna put him out of there, just like I did with his teammate Lito.

“That’s the main thing. I want to make people realise I am not a boring fighter. I am somebody who can take people out no matter what.”
