MMA legend Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has his eyes on Triller fights with boxing stars Shannon Briggs and Kubrat Pulev. The former UFC light heavyweight champion, 43, has not fought since a first-round knockout loss to Fedor Emelianenko under the Bellator banner in December 2019. It remains to be seen whether he’ll compete in MMA again, but his fighting days do not seem to be over yet. “I still love fighting,” he told the Post last week. “And before I retire, I want to do a boxing match.” This is not the first time Jackson has expressed interest in stepping into the ring. The American has a long-standing and trash-talk riddled rivalry with 50-year-old former boxing heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, who has not fought since a 2016 knockout win over Emilio Zarate. Jackson (38-14 MMA) and Briggs (60-6 boxing) both recently partnered with Triller Fight Club’s Triad Combat series, which pits mixed martial artists and boxers against each other in an amalgam of the two sports. Jackson serves as a mentor for the MMA fighters venturing into the promotion’s triangle-shaped ring, while Briggs is serving as team captain for the boxing side. Jackson is hoping to meet his rival under the Triller banner, and claims the fight is being discussed for this coming May. Rampage finds UFC fighter pay debate embarrassing – ‘people think we’re broke’ “Triller has agreed to have Shannon and I fight in May if Shannon can pass a physical – cause he’s old as hell,” Jackson said. “That’s the reason why I signed up to be in bed with Triller, so hopefully I can get a fight with Shannon.” The Triad Combat ruleset does not allow kicks, knees, elbows or grappling, which deprives MMA fighters of many of their most dangerous weapons. However, it does allow extensive clinching, ostensibly to give mixed martial artists an advantage against their adversaries from the boxing ring. Jackson isn’t convinced Triad Combat has created a truly level playing field, but believes he’ll still be able to beat Briggs if the fight materialises. “We can’t really use all our tools. We’re not allowed to kick, knee, elbow. So it’s not really the middle ground for MMA [and boxing] but I guess it’s the closest thing,” he said. “I think my chances would be great [against Briggs].” ONE Championship reveals busy 2022 schedule “I think Shannon’s going to underestimate me. He does not believe in my striking skills. He does not think I’m a hard puncher. I think him being inactive for so long is going to take effect on him. I feel very confident after the second round I’ll be able to do what the hell I want.” Jackson is also interested in fighting Bulgarian boxer Kubrat Pulev (28-2 boxing). The 40-year-old has only been beaten by Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, and recently debuted under the Triad Combat banner with a vicious knockout of former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir. “I’m coming to knock him out, and you guys will enjoy it” 😤 🇧🇷 #TriadCombat2 🔺 Don’t miss @junior_cigano vs. @KubratPulev on 2/26, at the @ToyotaCenter in Houston, TX 🎟 https://t.co/3QnRPslC6N 👀 @FiteTV pic.twitter.com/RVLHRBF6aU — Triller Fight Club (@trillerfight) January 31, 2022 However, the Bulgarian will first need to get by another former UFC champ in Junior dos Santos at the next Triad Combat event on February 26 in Houston, Texas. “I want to see if Dos Santos can beat Pulev,” Jackson said. “I didn’t like the outcome of him and my friend Frank Mir’s fight, so I’m gunning for Pulev. If Dos Santos does not get him, I’m going to have to get a couple of warm-up fights and jump in there and get Pulev myself.” “Pulev is a tough man,” he added. “I hope Dos Santos gets him. I’m rooting for Dos Santos. I’d probably need a warm-up fight after Shannon Briggs, because I don’t even consider Shannon Briggs’ old a** a warm-up fight. That’s just a satisfactory fight because he talks too much. I just want to put my fist in his mouth and shut him up. Then one more warm-up fight and I’d be happy to fight Pulev.”
