Vitaly Bigdash failed to make weight and pass hydration tests on Thursday in Singapore for his ONE Championship middleweight trilogy bout with Aung La N Sang. The Russian missed the 205-pound limit by 2 pounds when he stepped on the scales for ONE’s ceremonial weigh-ins at Singapore Indoor Stadium. The 37-year-old Bigdash (11-2) now has until 12pm on Friday afternoon to pass weight and hydration. Otherwise he will lose a percentage of his fight purse, and will have to negotiate a catchweight with his fellow former middleweight champ N Sang (27-12). The “Burmese Python” came in 1 pound under the mark at 204 pounds, as he looks to settle his long-standing rivalry with the man he credits with making him the martial artist he is today. The pair have shared the ONE Circle for 10 rounds, with one win apiece. Myanmar’s N Sang took the title from Bigdash at his second attempt in Yangon in June 2017. De Ridder aims to become ‘king of ONE Championship’ The 36-year-old N Sang passed hydration on Thursday morning. “Finally, about damn time I passed,” N Sang said, referencing his hydration miss for his last fight in July, when he knocked out Leandro Ataides in the first round of what became a catchweight bout. He then made weight at 92.5 kilograms. “Tomorrow we go to war, baby,” N Sang said, as his team from Sanford MMA, including coach Henri Hooft, cheered off camera. The main event of Friday’s card, which pits ONE two-division champ Reinier de Ridder in a middleweight title defence against welterweight king Kiamrian Abbasov, is safe, with both fighters passing hydration and making weight. “It’s light heavyweight, right?” De Ridder said, jokingly on Thursday morning, before tipping the scales at 92.6kg. The undefeated “Dutch Knight” (14-0) had joked in a pre-fight video package, which played in the arena at the ceremonial weigh-ins, that Abbasov (23-4) would need a stool to reach his chin. Standing face to face on the stage, the 1.88 metres-tall Abbasov motioned the height difference to the 1.93m Dutchman is not so great. Four other fighters also failed to pass weight and/or hydration tests at Thursday morning’s official weigh-ins, including co-main event title challenger Murat “The Butcher” Aygun, and were told to come back at 4pm to try again. The 33-year-old Aygun of Turkey was unable to give a sample for hydration in the morning, and was later announced as weighing in at 225 pounds at the ceremonial weigh-ins, ahead of his light heavyweight kickboxing title fight against champ Roman Kryklia. Commentator Michael Schiavello told viewers of the broadcast on ONE’s official YouTube channel that Aygun had again failed to pass weight and hydration, and had until noon on Friday to correct it. Ukraine’s Kryklia also had a scare during the morning’s official weigh-ins, when he initially thought he had passed weight at 102.15kg, but had to be told to step on the scales again after already putting on his shorts. The curtain came out, with the champion taking off all of his clothes, and he flashed a smile after making 102.1kg the second time around. “That was close,” Kryklia said, as he put on his clothes again. “Yeah, we don’t like it that close,” Ric Auty, ONE’s senior director of competition who was conducting the weigh-ins, said with a smile. Zebaztian Kadeztam, Valmir da Silva, and Daniyal Zainalov were also all given until 4pm on Thursday to try and pass again, before 7pm’s ceremonial weigh-ins. Russia’s Zainalov (7-0) weighed in at 205 pounds for his middleweight bout with Brazilian grappler Yuri Simoes (0-1). But Schiavello said Zainalov would need to redo his weight and hydration on Friday morning, as he had slightly missed both. Former ONE welterweight MMA champion Kadestam hit the 185-pound in his second weigh-in for the ceremonials, but still needs to pass hydration on fight day. The Swede’s opponent Da Silva weighed in at 184 pounds, and passed hydration on his second go.
