American wrestling specialist Jarred Brooks is dialled in on his imminent fight with South Africa’s Bokang Masunyane, but sees plenty of interesting opportunities further down the road. Brooks and Masunyane, ONE Championship’s No 2 and 1-ranked strawweights respectively, will collide on April 22 in Singapore. The winner will earn a crack at long-reigning strawweight champion Joshua Pacio, but Brooks is determined to focus on the task at hand – which he suspects will be more difficult than a potential title fight with the Filipino champ. ONE: Pacio enjoying Brooks trash talk, open to title fight “In my personal opinion, I think Bokang is better than Joshua Pacio,” the 28-year-old told the Post . “I’m not looking past Bokang. “I’m going to keep on keeping him in my mind, and when Joshua comes, I’m prepared for him as well.” While Brooks is focused on Bokang, that does not mean he has not given any thought to his future in ONE Championship. Despite being just two fights into his career with the Asian martial arts promotion, he already stands out as one of the biggest stars on its roster, in large part because of his previous fights in the UFC, Bellator and Rizin Fighting Federation, and his gift of the gab. He could seemingly parlay his popularity into any number of big-ticket fights – particularly if he wins the ONE strawweight title. One of the most compelling of the bunch would be a fight with fellow UFC veteran Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, who is widely considered one of the greatest fighters of all time. It is a fight Brooks has been dreaming of since he and Johnson both called the UFC flyweight division home, and one Johnson recently expressed interest in himself. “A million per cent,” Brooks said when asked about his interest in fighting Johnson. “Nothing but respect for Demetrious, [his coach] Matt Hume, everybody that comes out of that camp.” “I’m looking forward to fighting Demetrious in the near future, and he even brought it up, which is mind-blowing to me that he even said my name. Having the greatest of all time give me props, it almost brings a tear to your eye.” For Brooks, fighting Johnson would most likely mean climbing 10 pounds north to the ONE flyweight division. It would be an ambitious move, as the division is populated by much larger fighters – including the hulking champion Adriano Moraes – but the American is undeterred. In fact, he would even consider moving all the way up to the bantamweight division to fight new champion John Lineker, his former training partner, if the money justified the move. “At American Top Team, I got [Lineker] ready for Ian McCall,” Brooks said, looking back on his training sessions with the Brazilian. “His wrestling ability has changed a lot, and he actually gave me a lot of props on helping his wrestling ability. That’s one fight that I wouldn’t talk trash to because I know his coaches and how much his coaches respected me and how much he respected me.” “That guy definitely has hands of stone. You better watch out for those fists,” Brooks added. “If it came down to it, yeah, if the money is right, then 100 per cent, but ultimate respect to John Lineker. “Even if it came down to me fighting in a bigger weight class, I’ll do it. You’ve just got to pay me, at the end of the day.”
