It is once again Grand Prix season in ONE Championship. On Saturday, the Asian martial arts promotion announced a Muay Thai tournament featuring eight of the best flyweight strikers on earth, plucked from both “the art of eight limbs” and kick-boxing competition. The fun will begin on May 20 at an event that is expected to emanate from ONE’s home base of Singapore. The first-round matchups were part of the promotion’s announcement on Saturday. The Thai will battle Jacob Smith of the United Kingdom, who trains alongside human highlight reel Liam Harrison. Rodtang will attempt to rebound from a submission loss to Demetrious Johnson in a special rules attraction at ONE X last month, but has not yet been beaten in Muay Thai competition under the ONE Championship banner. He will be looking to build on the momentum of a decision win over Thailand’s Mongkolpetch Petchyindee Academy in his last appearance, and ultimately earn a shot at redemption against Rodtang, whom he has lost to twice previously. “It’s on,” Haggerty wrote on Instagram after the Grand Prix was announced. “I will take you all out 1 by 1.” The Briton’s opponent in the first round will be Brazil’s Walter Goncalves, who famously lost a razor-close split decision to Rodtang in 2019. The Brazilian lost his next bout to Japan’s Momotaro because of a leg injury in 2020, and has not fought since. The first round will also feature an interesting clash between Thailand’s Superlek Kiatmoo9 and Japan’s Taiki Naito. Superlek is ranked No 2 in both ONE’s flyweight Muay Thai and flyweight kick-boxing divisions, while Naito is perched at No 4 in the promotion’s flyweight kick-boxing rankings. Superlek will be looking to build on a pair of decision wins outside the ONE Circle, while Naito aims to make it three in a row after decision victories over Petchdam Petchyindee Academy and Wang Wenfeng under the ONE banner. The final first bout will pit Cypriot Savvas Michael against Iranian-Malaysian Amir Naseri. Michael will be looking to build on the momentum of a win outside the ONE Circle, and further separate himself from a decision loss to Naito in his last ONE appearance.
