Tye and Kade Ruotolo, two of the brightest young talents on the submission grappling circuit, are set to make their ONE Championship debuts on May 20. The Hawaiian twins will not receive warm welcomes. Tye will make his debut in a 12-minute submission-only grappling match against five-time Eddie Bravo Invitational champion Garry Tonon, while Kade will meet Japanese grappling legend Shinya Aoki under the same rule-set. BREAKING NEWS: BOOM!!! On May 20, the world will once again witness real jiu-jitsu at the highest levels on the planet... Posted by Chatri Sityodtong on Monday, 18 April 2022 The brothers’ debuts were revealed by ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong on Monday evening. The ONE boss clarified that, unlike the organisation’s previous submission grappling contests, these bouts will not end with a draw if neither fighter achieves a submission. “If a match ends without a submission, the athlete with the most number of real submission attempts wins,” Chatri explained on Facebook. The Ruotolo brothers, for those unaware, have been hailed as future stars since before they were teenagers. In more recent years, the pair have collected an array of medals and trophies for their efforts on the submission grappling circuit. Both train under Brazilian jiu jitsu legend Andre Galvao, who recently battled two-division MMA champion Reinier de Ridder to a draw in a submission grappling match in his own ONE debut. For 30-year-old American Tonon (6-1 MMA), the grappling match with Tye will serve as an opportunity to rebound from a first-round knockout loss to Thanh Le in a failed bid to capture ONE’s featherweight MMA title in March. The 38-year-old Aoki (47-10 MMA) will also be looking to rebound from a stoppage loss, having wilted under a storm of second-round strikes courtesy of fellow Japanese legend Yoshihiro Akiyama at ONE X last month in Singapore. ONE Championship reveals flyweight Muay Thai grand prix The May 20 event, which will emanate from Singapore, will also feature the opening round of ONE Championship’s eight-man flyweight Muay Thai Grand Prix. The tournament will feature flyweight Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon, former champion Jonathan Haggerty, and Japanese kick-boxer Taiki Naito. More bouts are expected to be added to the line-up in the coming weeks.
