Bokang Masunyane failed to pass his final weight and hydration tests on Friday morning, with Jarred Brooks agreeing a 128-pound catchweight for their title eliminator. No 1-ranked strawweight Masunyane missed hydration at Thursday morning’s official weigh-ins in Singapore, and again in the afternoon, but had until 9am on fight day to pass. The 27-year-old South African (8-0) will now pay “The Monkey God” Brooks (18-2) 20 per cent of his purse for their ONE Championship 156 bout at Singapore Indoor Stadium. “My opponent missed weight it’s all good tho let the fight continue,” the American tweeted. ONE lightweight kick-boxing champion Regian Eersel had also failed hydration on Thursday, while strawweight Muay Thai title bout contender Smilla Sundell missed weight. But both fighters passed their final checks on Friday morning, leaving the main and co-main events unaffected. Undefeated “Little Giant” Masunyane has not fought in Asian martial arts promotion ONE since a December 2020 first-round KO of Rene Catalan. In the meantime, former UFC star Brooks has taken the division by storm, reeling off a second-round submission of Lito Adiwang last November before a unanimous decision win over Hiroba Minowa in January to shoot up to No 2 in the rankings. The winner of the bout was set to get a title shot at champion Joshua Pacio, though Masunyane is now no longer certain to get a crack at the belt through victory, given he missed weight. ONE Championship cuts 5 fighters from its roster “I’ve seen how you are and you’re gonna say you have the speed, all the agility, all that s***,” Brooks told Masunyane in a face-to-face interview with ONE commentator Michael Schiavello this week. “I’ve seen you do front flips, backflips. I can’t do a backflip but I’ll beat your a**.” “We’ll see about that,” replied Masunyane, who is aiming to become the first Africa-born and based champion in a major MMA promotion. Here are the final weight and hydration test results for ONE 156. Hydration values less than or equal to 1.0250 earn a passing mark, while values greater than or equal to 1.0251 earn a failing mark.
