China’s Zhang Weili is promising fireworks in her UFC 275 rematch against Joanna Jedrzejczyk at Singapore Indoor Stadium next month – which fans of the strawweight division will surely welcome. The clash between the two former champions, who put on 2020’s Fight of the Year the first time around, should act as a panacea of sorts to fans still fuming over last weekend’s dull UFC 274 title fight . Carla Esparza snatched the belt from Rose Namajunas via split decision in Phoenix, Arizona, though neither woman covered themselves in glory, but Zhang is confident she will put on another show. “I believe you all watched the fight between Rose and Carla,” she said in an interview on Chinese social media. “This fight was indeed very uneventful. “I believe no one wants to watch a championship fight like that. As a champion, you need to show heart, the indomitable spirit. You can’t be thinking about win or lose once you are in the cage. I think that’ll give yourself a heavy burden to bear. “Rose was a bit overly afraid of Carla’s wrestling, afraid of herself losing. She executed the coaches’ strategy well, and hoped to win the fight with that last-round takedown. But that’s really hard to do. “So I think while in the cage, we shouldn’t overthink. Just think about how you can showcase your best self, your best ability. That would be enough.” UFC 275: Zhang ‘turned down’ 5-round rematch, claims Jedrzejczyk The 32-year-old Zhang (21-3) has taken her fight camp to Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA in Phuket, Thailand, ahead of her three-round rematch with Jedrzejczyk on June 2. “I’m doing well training in Thailand – I’m well acclimated now, everything is good,” she said. “We will full-heartedly prepare for this fight. And we will leave it all in the cage. “I believe this fight in June in Singapore will 100 per cent be a very exciting fight. So stay tuned everyone.” Like “Magnum” Zhang, Jedrzejczyk (16-4) also has two losses to Namajunas on her record. But that did not stop her from expressing sympathy for her former rival, after the American “Thug” posted on Instagram that she felt like a “[expletive] human being” following the criticism of her performance against Esparza. “This is a tough business and I feel so sorry for Rose,” Jedrzejczyk told a UFC 275 virtual press conference on Tuesday. “She doesn’t have to be sorry. “It looks easy, that’s the crazy thing about this sport, the beauty of this sport that we perform – we train, we do the weight cuts, we don’t see our families and friends for a long time, and sometimes when you step into the Octagon it’s not your night. “I took big losses in my fighting career, but it doesn’t define you. You have to keep your head up, change some things, and get back right to the top. But I’m super-motivated, disciplined and ready for my upcoming fight with Weili Zhang.”
