Jarred Brooks is finally set to get his wish and challenge Joshua Pacio for the ONE Championship strawweight MMA title. The American grappling specialist, 29, will receive his crack at 26-year-old Filipino champion Pacio on June 3, in the headlining attraction of the ONE Championship 158 event, which is likely to take place in Singapore. The promotion revealed the strawweight title fight on Thursday evening following an initial report from Sports Illustrated . “It’s on,” Pacio wrote in an Instagram post. “I guarantee you it’s gonna be fireworks.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by ONE Championship (@onechampionship) While the date of Pacio and Brooks’ title fight was only just unveiled, the bout has been in the pipeline since last month, when the latter picked up a first-round submission victory over Bokang Masunyane in a strawweight title eliminator. The victory pushed Brooks (19-2) to 3-0 in ONE, after a submission win over Pacio’s Team Lakay teammate Lito Adiwang and a decision win over Japan’s Hiroba Minowa. Before joining the Asian martial arts promotion, “The Monkey God” competed in the UFC, Rizin Fighting Federation, and Bellator MMA. “We are fighting for a world title on June 3,” he wrote on Instagram after news of his fight with Pacio surfaced. “Make sure you tune in.” While Brooks has been extremely impressive in ONE, he will have his hands full with Pacio (20-3), one of the promotion’s top pound-for-pound fighters. The Filipino will be looking for the fourth defence of his second reign as the ONE strawweight champion after thwarting challenges from Rene Catalan, Alex Silva, and most recently, Japan’s Yosuke Saruta, whom he stopped with a storm of first-round punches last September. It’s a challenge.” No other ONE Championship 157 bouts have been made official at this time, but the card’s complete line-up should be unveiled soon.
