Martin Nguyen is hoping to welcome Eddie Alvarez to the ONE Championship featherweight division.

Alvarez, the former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion, has been with ONE since 2019, but has not achieved the results he wanted, tallying just one victory in four fights.

Australia’s Nguyen, the former ONE featherweight champion, has heard rumours that the American is planning to drop down a division in search of greener pastures, and would love to fight him if it happens.

“Man, I think it would be spectacular, with his experience, his calibre,” the 33-year-old, who is currently ranked No 3 at featherweight, told ONE recently. “I’d be more than honoured to welcome him to the featherweight division. I’m sure if he gets past me, then he’ll obviously be a top-five, top-three contender for that title shot.”

At 38 years old, Alvarez is seemingly nearing the end of his time in MMA, but Nguyen believes the former champion still has some fight left in him.

“Eddie Alvarez is [one of] the most experienced athletes in ONE Championship at the moment,” he said. “In terms of MMA, I still feel like he’s got a few more fights underneath his belt, at least a minimum of three or four fights.
