Anatoly Malykhin is now a two-division MMA title-holder in ONE Championship.
The Russian, who has held interim light heavyweight gold since February, won the promotion’s light heavyweight belt with a vicious first-round knockout win over Reinier de Ridder in the main event of ONE on Prime Video 5 on Saturday in Manila’s Mall of Asia Arena.
It was as decisive as victories come, as he denied his rival’s takedown attempts from the opening bell, and unleashed a destructive boxing assault that simply could not be survived.

In the card’s co-main event, lightweight submission grappling champion Kade Ruotolo defended his belt with a lopsided decision win over Brazilian challenger Matheus Gabriel.
Earlier on the card, an anticipated welterweight MMA contest ended in huge disappointment, as former two-division KSW champion Roberto Soldic had his ONE debut derailed after absorbing an inadvertent low blow from his opponent Murad Ramazanov.
The fight was ruled a No Contest when he could not continue.
Filipino-American Muay Thai star Jackie Buntan also picked up a big win on the lead card, defeating England’s Amber Kitchen at a 130-pound catchweight after she missed weight for the fight.

ONE on Prime Video 5 kicks off in under 10 minutes, and the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila is already filling up.
The first fight of the night will see Filipino star Denice Zamboanga take on Chinese underdog Lin Heqin at atomweight. It is a fight that is rife with title implications – with both women targeting champion Angela Lee ahead of time – and a great starter for the fans in the building.

Play-by-play commenter Brent Stover is kicking things off with his broadcast partners Mitch Chilson and Rich Franklin, running through the highlights of the card to come for the fans in the building and those tuning in on Amazon Prime on the other side of the world.
Denice Zamboanga and Lin Heqin should be walking out any minute now.


Here we go!

Denice Zamboanga, the No. 3 contender in the ONE atomweight division and one of the top mixed martial artists from the Philippines, is in the Circle for the first of the night. And after a rousing walk-out, her opponent Lin Heqin from China is too.
With that, there’s nothing left for them to do but fight.
Round one starts in seconds!


Zamboanga and Lin in the Circle

Round one kicks off and Denice Zamboanga quickly starts to land on Lin – to a massive roar from the crowd. She is supposed to be at a disadvantage on the feet against the Chinese kickboxing specialist, so this is big.
Zamboanga shoots for a takedown, but it’s denied, so it’s back to the striking – and things quickly take a turn for her, as she’s cracked by a sizzling check hook. She survives, and initiates a tie-up against the cage. This is a smart move.
They break and its back to striking at range. They are taking turns pushing the action, and are both landing some big shots. The round ends just like it began, with both women swinging, and the crowd going wild.

Round one in the books

It’s back to striking at range for the two atomweights. Lin’s face is marked up already – a memento of Zamboanga’s success in round one.
So far this fight is all about quick bursts of action, violent collisions at close range. Both women are landing but Zamboanga seems to be doing more damage. There is blood trickling from Lin’s brow now, but she is landing some nice leg kicks that are echoing through the arena.
Zamboanga’s striking looks better than ever – a good thing considering she hasn’t been able to use her grappling yet.


Onto the second

“Final round,” announcer Dom Lau reminds us from Circle-side, and the two atomweights get back to it.
Lin is fighting with more urgency, pushing the action and hacking away at Zamboanga’s leg with kicks. Zamboanga fires back with a wild volley against the cage, but she gets stung with a few counters in close, and after a failed takedown, initiates a tie-up. There is a big hematoma forming on the side of Zamboanga’s face now – clearly, Lin has been landing. The kicks are working really well for the Chinese fighter. She is doing a good job of keeping her opponent at range.
30 seconds left, and the crowd is cheering on their countrywoman. Lin initiates a tie-up, and the fight ends. We go to the judges!


Final round!

The judges are split on this one, which is not surprising given both women had their moments.
But in the end, it’s a split decision for the Filipino star Denice Zamboanga – and 1-0 for the home team.

In her post-fight interview with Mitch Chilson, Zamboanga once again calls for a fight with her former training partner and close friend Stamp Fairtex – the atomweight division’s No 1 contender.
“I have interest in taking rank one from Stamp, my closest friend,” she said, setting her sights on the Thai. “If I beat her I can challenge the champion.”

The second fight of the night will see Senegalese wrestler Oumar Kane – better known as “Reug Reug” – take on Uzbekistan’s Jasur Mirzamukhamedov in a heavyweight MMA clash.
Heavyweights have a habit of ending things quickly an expectedly, so keep a close eye on this one.

Heavyweight MMA up next

Reug Reug and Mirzamukhamedov are in the Circle, with a combined weight of close to 500lbs.
Dom Lau has made his introductions, the referee has given his final instructions, so it’s time to get going.
They have three five-minute rounds to work with.


500lbs of fighter in the Circle

Reug Reug gets a takedown right out of the gate, which is exactly what he wants against the Muay Thai specialist Mirzamukhamedov.
He is trying to pass guard. He’s having some trouble doing it, but finding plenty of openings for ground-and-pound. Reug Reug is warned for grabbing the fence, and Mirzamukhamedov gets back to his feet – meaning the danger begins anew for Reug Reug.
The Senegalese wrestler gets another takedown, and rides out the first round raining down ground and pound in top position.


Round one underway

Round two is underway, and Reug Reug slips under a punch to land another takedown – really nice timing from the Senegalese star. He spends some more time in top position raining down strikes.
They return to the feet, and Reug Reug gets popped by a big punch. He looks hurt, but he is good enough at wrestling – or maybe just strong enough – to throw Mirzamukhamedov back to the mat like a rag doll.
They briefly return to the feet, but Reug Reug initiates a tie-up and they finish the round against the cage.


More wrestling from Reug Reug

Somehow, we’ve made it to the third round of this heavyweight fight, and it’s right back to the wrestling for Reug Reug. He can seemingly land takedowns at will against his Uzbekistani foe.
Mirzamukhamedov escapes to the feet again, and the danger resumes for Reug Reug, but after a few tense exchanges, the Senegalese wrestler once again latches onto his foe’s hips and slams him to the canvas – just as Dom Lau announces we’ve entered the final minute. It’s been takedown after takedown for the fan favourite.
Reug Reug ends the fight in top position, where he spent the majority of the fight so far.


A three-round wrestling clinic

As expected, it’s a unanimous decision win for Reug Reug, who landed multiple takedowns in every round of the fight.
He doesn’t get a post-fight interview with Mitch Chilson, but Wolof translators are undoubtedly hard to find in the Philippines, so that’s understandable.



A clear-cut unanimous decision

Up next is a 180lb submission grappling match between Tye Ruotolo – the twin brother of the lightweight champion Kade – and Russian MMA veteran Marat Gafurov.
Gafurov took this one on short notice, and Tye is the more accomplished grappler by a huge margin, so this one should be one-way traffic, but you never know what will happen in the Circle.
The two grapplers will have a single 10-minute round to sort it out.


Submission grappling takes centre stage

Tye starts hunting for a takedown right away, but Gafurov denies his first attempts. The Hawaiian looks for a hip toss, they fight for position, and he winds up on bottom position under his Russian foe. This looks bad to the untrained eye, but Tye has no issues fighting off his back – this might even be what he wants.
Gafurov spends several minutes in top position, and the referee breaks them apart. They return to the feet and the quest for a takedown begins anew for Tye. He rolls into a leg attack, but again ends up on his back.
Suddenly, he is trying to rip Gafurov’s arm off. Gafurov fights it well, but Tye throws up an arm triangle, and it’s pretty deep. There is a momentary struggle, then the Russian taps.

Tye gets the tap

As expected, Tye gets a $US 50,000 bonus for his sub, which he says he will put toward the gym he and his brother Kade are building in Costa Rica.
“You’re the man, Chatri,” he said in his Circle interview with Mitch Chilson. “You pretty much built our gym.”

The American then very possibly sets up his next fight, calling out two-division MMA champ Reinier de Ridder, who fights Anatoly Malykhin in the main event, for a grappling match.
“The essence of jiu jitsu is beating the bigger guy with technique,” he said. “I would love to get a jiu jitsu match with Reinier. I think I could sub him.”


Tye gets bonus, calls out RDR

The lead card will wrap up with a lightweight contest between Brazil’s Edson Marques, and Eduard Folayang, who is arguably the most accomplished fighter in the history of Filipino MMA.
The 39-year-old legend has lost his last four MMA contests, so he definitely has his back against the wall against the upset-minded Marques.

As expected, the crowd is going wild for ‘The Landslide’ Eduard Folayang. He is going to have his hands full in this one, but this arena is going to be absolutely deafening if he pulls of a win.
He and Marques have three five-minute rounds to work with.



Lots of love for ‘The Landslide’

Right away it’s clear that Marques has a big reach advantage. Folayang is looking to counterbalance his deficit in that department by kicking his foe’s legs, but Marques is moving well, and has avoided any serious impacts so far. Now he is pressuring Folayang against the cage – but Folayang refuses to give up ground. He pushes forward with a head kick and some punches, and the crowd erupts into Folayang chants.
More kicks from Folayang, then one of his patented spinning attacks – but it narrowly misses. The crowd is loving this, and explodes into cheers every time he lands.
With 30 seconds left, they tie up, and Folayang lands some uppercuts in close, but narrowly avoids a knee. Marques fires off a flurry as the round ends, but Folayang fires back at the buzzer.


A tense first round

More Folayang chants to start round two. He and Marques meet in the centre of the Circle and trade kicks until he lands an inadvertent low blow, and the action is paused.
They resume, and Folayang gets right back to his leg kicks – but Marques responds with a head kick that seems to land flush. They tie up, then break, and it seems like Folayang is ok.
The Filipino star gets back to his kicks, and lunges in with some punches. He eats a counter and stumbles a bit, but again seems to be fine. Marques throws a kick, and Folayang swarms him – but gets blasted by a right hand as he closes the distance.
Folayang face plants, and it’s over.

Folayang goes down in round two

It’s a second-round TKO win for Edson Marques, and the victory is good for a US $50,000 bonus courtesy of ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
“Obrigado, obrigado, obrigado,” the Brazilian says in Portuguese – no translator needed: that’s “thank you, thank you, thank you.”
He also broke down his win through his interpreter.
“I watched his fight many, many times so I could understand his game and I found the right hand,” he said. “My first knockout in ONE Championship.”



Marques scores a bonus

The ONE on Prime Video 5 lead card is done, which means it’s time for the main card.
Before we get to the title fights atop the bill, we will kick things off with a lightweight MMA bout pitting South Korea’s Dae Sung-Park against American Lowen Tynanes, and a 130-pound Muay Thai clash between Briton Amber Kitchen and Filipino-American Jackie Buntan.
But first: the 10 fighters on the main card take the stage for ONE’s customary pre-fight introductions – something you won’t see in many other promotions.


Time for the Main Card

Lowen Tynanes is in the Circle and Dae Sung Park is walking out, so it’s almost time to get this going.
Tynanes, a wrestler from Hawaii, will be looking to rebound from the first setback of his career: a split-decision loss to Gafurov – the same man we saw lose to Tye Ruotolo on the lead card.
Park is also riding a loss, having been knocked out by Abraao Amorim in his last appearance.
The two lightweights will have three five-minute arounds to try turn things around.


Tynanes vs Park on deck

Tynanes is pushing forward to start round one, but it’s Park firing off the strikes – a head kick attempt, then a procession of leg kicks.
This is the way it goes for a few minutes, until Tynanes looks to his wrestling and shoots in for a takedown. He winds up on Park’s back against the cage. He has his hooks in and he is fighting his Korean’s foes hands in pursuit of a choke. This is a bad, bad spot for Park – especially with more than a minute left on the clock.
We clear the four-minute mark, and Park is still defending, and with 30 seconds remaining, he finally spins into a less dangerous position, and returns to his feet. You’ve got to give him props for surviving that situation.
The round ends with the two lightweights tied up against the cage.


Tynanes goes choke-hunting round 1

Tynanes showboats a bit to start round two. Park lands more kicks to the thigh, and Tynanes warns him that he is getting close to a low-blow. Then the Hawaiian ties him up against the cage.
They separate, and it’s more of the same: Tynanes inching forward, Park firing off kicks. Not a ton of action in this one so far, and the crowd is getting agitated.
“Let’s go!” somebody yells from out in the stands.
With a minute and half left, Tynanes initiates a tie-up, but gets caught with something as he closes the gap, and it opens a cut on his brow. The action is paused while the referee checks the wound, and the fight is allowed to continue. It’s back to the tie-up for Tynanes, and after a scramble, he ends up on his foe’s back as the round ends.


More of the same...

We’re into round three of this undeniably slow fight, and it seems like Tynanes is comfortably ahead on the scorecards. He looks to his wrestling right away, and after a brief struggle, pulls his foe down to the mat and once again takes his back.
The Hawaiian is chasing a rear-naked choke again – but now he’s mixing in some punches to the head for good measure. By this point the cut on his brow has leaked blood all over the Circle, but make no mistake, he is soundly in control of this one.
He rides out the round on his foe’s back, and we go to the judges.


Bloody Tynanes in control

Surprisingly, it’s a split-decision win for Lowen Tynanes. From Circle-side, it certainly looked like it should have be unanimous – though Park did land more strikes on the feet.
The victorious Hawaiian leaves the cage without a post-fight interview as a team of officials work to scrub up the blood he left on the canvas.

Up next is a 130-pound catchweight Muay Thai contest between Filipino-American star Jackie Buntan and England’s Amber Kitchen. The fight was supposed to be contested in the 125-pound strawweight division, but Buntan failed to pass a hydration test inside the allotted timeframe and missed weight as a result.

This one will be a rematch of an amateur fight that Kitchen won by split-decision. The Briton will be looking for her first win in ONE, while it will be Buntan’s chance to rebound from a failed title bid opposite Smilla Sundell.
They’re in the Circle now, so let’s get down to business. They have three, three-minute rounds to find a way to win.


Buntan vs Kitchen up next

Right away it is Kitchen leading the dance and Buntan looking to counter. Kitchen fires off a few kicks, and Buntan offers some big punches in return. Kitchen lets fly with some more kicks, and Buntan continues to return fire. This is a fun tempo.
With a minute left, Buntan lands a clean punch – maybe the best strike of the fight so far. She throws a few kicks behind it, and now Kitchen’s face is showing signs of damage.
The Briton is still landing, but Buntan finishes the round with a nice flurry.


A fun first round

Kitchen starts round two with a spearing push-kick, and continues to charge forward. Buntan, meanwhile, is skirting the edges of the Circle firing back with counterpunches.
The Filipino-American looks to reclaim control of the Circle with a flurry of punches – then does it again a moment later. Kitchen is landing the better kicks, but Buntan is definitely landing the better punches.
Dom Lau announces there are 30 seconds left, and both women crank up the offence a bit as the round concludes. This is a close fight. One more round to go.


Another close one

Kitchen comes out with a sense of urgency in round three, but Buntan makes her pay for it, and sends her foe crashing to the mat with a punch – that makes this a 10-8 round for the Filipino-American unless the Briton returns the favour.
The crowd is loving Buntan’s performance in this round and her name is echoing through the Mall of Asia Arena.
Kitchen gets back to pushing forward, but Buntan is doing a good job of evading her strikes. The Filipino-American charges forward again, and lands a few more clean punches. They clinch, trade some knees, and separate.
They continue to trade in the Circle until the fight concludes, and the crowd goes while, sensing Buntan might have done enough to win.

Buntan scores knockdown in 3

As expected, Jackie Buntan wins a unanimous decision, with her third-round knockdown seemingly sealing the deal.
“She’s a tough girl,” she said in her post-fight interview with Mitch Chilson, giving Kitchen props.
“I just wanna say the crowd is insane,” she added, pushing the crowd inside the Mall of Asia Arena into an explosion of cheers.



UD for Jackie B

It’s “Robocop” versus the “Terminator” here.
Murad Ramazanov walks out to the theme son from Terminator for his welterweight MMA bout with highly-touted debutant Roberto Soldic.
A title shot is likely to be on the line for the winner here.

Wow. No one was expecting that.
Roberto Soldic takes a nasty one right in the nether regions from Murad Ramazanov early in the first round.
The Croatian has five minutes to recover here, if he wants to take it all. But he can’t continue, and the fight is ruled a No Contest.
Huge disappointment for the crowd. And for ONE – this was expected to steal the show this morning.

Low blow ends it early

We’ve made it to the ONE on Prime Video 5 co-main event: a lightweight submission grappling title fight, with American champion Kade Ruotolo looking for his first defence against Brazilian challenger Matheus Gabriel.
Kade is known as one of the most exciting fighters on the submission grappling circuit, but he will need to be careful against his fellow BJJ black belt Gabriel, who is known for his dangerous bottom game.
This one will be contested over a single 10-minute round.


Grappling title up for grabs

Matheus Gabriel immediately lives up to his reputation and pulls guard, and begins fishing for submissions for something from bottom position. But the champion Kade Ruotolo is wise to all his early set-ups, and floats around in top position looking for opportunities of his own.
With three minutes off the clock, Ruotolo is still trying to get through his opponent’s guard. He is having some difficulty, and after briefly attacking an ankle lock, the ref stands them up.
We’re almost at the half-way mark, and Ruotolo shoots for another takedown – which Gabriel welcomes with another guard pull. Ruotolo doesn’t engage, then Gabriel pulls guard again, and the champion climbs into top position.

Ruotolo seems to be getting impatient and flips into a leg attack, which the referee seems to denote as an official submission attempt (ONE grappling matches are scored based on submission attempts).
With three minutes, remaining, Gabriel tries to leap onto the champion’s back, but Ruotolo shrugs him off and is once again in top position. The champion is looking confident, and is willingly offering his leg to his Brazilian rival to set something up.
They return to the feet, and Ruotolo lands a takedown with a minute left. He attacks another leg, and continues to do so from bottom position. He’s definitely being aggressive, but we go the distance.


Ruotolo and Gabriel go the distance

As expected, Kade Ruotolo retains his title with a unanimous-decision win, the product of his being the far more aggressive fighter over 10 minutes.
“I thought I could have got the finish for sure,” he said in his post-fight interview with Mitch Chilson. “Sorry guys, I tried to get the submission.”
“He has crazy flexible ankles and knees apparently. I felt a couple of pops but he didn’t want to get put out,” he added. “Props to him on some crazy flexibility.”
Before he leaves the cage the champ calls out fellow lightweight grapplers Tainan Dalpra and Tommy Langaker, daring them to challenge him.
“Where you at? Let’s go boys.”




Ruotolo retains belt with UD

All that’s left of the ONE on Prime Video 5 card is the main event, which will see light heavyweight MMA champ Reinier de Ridder attempt to defend his belt against slimmed-down interim heavyweight champion Anatoly Malykhin. Both men are undefeated as pros, at 16-0 and 11-0 respectively.
De Ridder, who also holds the middleweight belt, will be looking for his first light heavyweight title defense, while Malykhin will be making his first walk to the Circle since he knocked out Kirill Grishenko to win interim heavyweight gold in February.
Malykhin is in the Circle, and De Ridder is on his way. It’s time to find out who leaves it with the light heavyweight belt.
They have twenty-five minutes, but it seems almost impossible that this one goes the distance.


Main event up next

We are underway, and right away the BJJ black belt De Ridder is chasing a takedown. But he instantly runs into issues. It looks like he is trying to take down a tree. Malykhin won’t budge – and blasts the light heavyweight champion with a few huge punches, one of which seems to hurt him.

Malykhin clobbers de Ridder in one

Anatoly Malykhin is now the light heavyweight champion and interim heavyweight champion.
He is also US $100,000 richer thanks to two bonuses from ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
“I am so happy,” the new two-division champ said through his translator before running out of the cage to thank Chatri. He then vowed to learn English.
“I already knew I would since yesterday.”
