There was plenty of drama as usual at Thursday’s ONE Championship Fight Night 12 weigh-ins and hydration tests.
The biggest takeaway, though, was Superlek missing weight, and potentially putting Saturday’s Muay Thai main event at Lumpinee Stadium against Tagir Khalilov in danger.


ONE’s flyweight kickboxing champion was left attempting to negotiate a catchweight with his opponent, as were Walter Goncalves and Yuya Wakamatsu, who also missed weight having passed hydration.
Here is how all the drama unfolded on Thursday.

The American will make this comfortably – 123.25 pounds, she makes weight for her strawweight submission grappling bout with Amanda alequin.


Tammi Musumeci first up

American heavyweight Dustin Joynson is second up to the scales.
He passes hydration at 1.0226.

The big man weighs in and has no problems at 240.75 pounds. He makes weight to fight Amir Aliakbari.

Garry Tonon in third.
Hydration sample is all good at 1.0136, he passes easily. Don’t anticipate any problems with his weight either.

It is all good – 153.25 pounds for the “Lion Killer”, he makes weight.
Over to Shamil Gasanov.


Tonon on point

Xie Wei passes hydration easily at 1.0074.
The Chinese flyweight, who is set to fight Yuya Wakamatsu on Saturday, steps on the scales and registers 135.5 pounds.

He misses weight, the first miss of the night. He asks for the curtain, and is still overweight at 135.25 pounds. “No?” he asks, forlornly.
He has until 11pm to pass both weight and hydration.


Xie Wei misses weight

Fifth up to the scales is Muay Thai atomweight Phetjeeja.
“The Queen” is all good on her hydration test (1.0191). She steps up and weighs in at 114.5 pounds, making weight.

She is set to fight Spain’s Lara Fernandez, who has yet to come in, but it is still early doors.


Phetjeeja passes checks

Constantin Rusu is the sixth fighter in.
But he is the first fighter to fail hydration (1.0310). The Russian kickboxing lightweight checks his weight in an unofficial attempt, and registers 168.75 pounds, which would be fine.
He has until 11pm to pass both weight and hydration.

Rusu fails hydraiton

Now it’s the turn of Shamil Gasanov.
“The Cobra” passes hydration easily at 1.0031. And he makes weight at 153 pounds.
No problems for the Russian MMA featherweight.

Gasanov passes easily

Lara Fernandez is now giving her hydration sample.
The Spaniard narrowly passes at 1.0244. She weighs in and is fine at 114.75 pounds.
Her atomweight Muay Thai fight with Phetjeeja is all good to go.

Fernandez is spot on

“Little Piranha” Yuya Wakamatsu is next up.
His hydration test is comfortably under the threshold at 1.0132. But the curtain is coming out for the Japanese MMA flyweight.

He misses weight at 135.5 pounds.
He and his opponent Xei Wei will both have to come back and pass their checks by 11pm.


Yuya misses weight

MMA featherweight Aaron Canarte is now giving his sample. It’s well under the 1.0250 threshold at 1.0103.
The Ecuadorian passes hydration and steps on the scale. It’s 1453.75 pounds, he makes weight with plenty of room to spare.
Over to Akbar Abdullaev.

Canarte all good

Amanda Alequin gives a sample of 1.0005 and passes hydration with ease, too.
“Tubby” will have no problems on the scale – she is well under the strawweight mark at 123.5 pounds.

She told the Post on Wednesday she has been enjoying all the Thai food she wants this week ahead of her grappling match with Tammi Musumeci, which is now official.

‘Tubby’ eases through

Bogdan Shumarov passes hydration at 1.0229.
He makes weight at 169.25 pounds. His lightweight kickboxing bout with Constantin Rusu is now official.

Shumarov sails on

Walter Goncalves is next up.
The Brazilian Muay Thai flyweight, who is trying his hand at MMA, fails hydration at 1.0266.

He steps on the scales for an unofficial attempt and is on the mark at 135 pounds.
But he still needs to come back by 11pm and pass both weight and hydration for his fight with Banma Duoji.


Goncalves fails hydration

Akbar Abdullaev is now weighing in.
The Kyrgyzstani squeaks through the hydration test at 1.0248.

He weighs in at 154.25 pounds, no problems there either.
His featherweight MMA fight with Aaron Canarte is all set.


Akbar all good

Amir Aliakbari is now walking up, as heavyweight champion Anatoly Malykhin looks on in the room.
His hydration sample is all fine (1.0229).

The Iranian makes weight at 250.25 pounds.
He will fight Dustin Joynson on Saturday morning.


Amir on the money

Banma Duoji now walks in with 25 minutes gone. His Sample is all good at 1.0049, he passes hydration. The Chinese MMA flyweight is 133.5 pounds, he makes weight easily.
Over to Walter Goncalves now, who failed hydration earlier.

We’re still waiting on two fighters – Superlek and Tagir Khalilov, the main event duo – to give their samples.
Four have failed their first round of checks. Xei Wei, Yuya Wakamatsu, Goncalves, and Constantin Rusu. They all have until 11pm to pass both weight and hydration.


Duoji gets it done

There’s still plenty of time to go – over two hours – but main event duo Superlek and Tagir Khalilov are yet to come in to give samples.
Could we be in for some drama?

Tagir Khalilov finally comes in after an hour to give his sample.
The Russian is fine, and passes hydration easily at 1.0095. No problems at all with his weight either.

Tagir ticks the boxes

Xei Wei is back for his second attempt at passing hydration.
But the Chinese MMA flyweight registers the same mark as before (1.0266) and he fails hydration again.
He has until 11pm to come back and pass.


No dice for Xie

Superlek is finally here, after 70 minutes. The flyweight kickboxing champ gives his hydration sample. He passes hydration easily (1.0156).
The Thai is on the scales now, and he’s going to need the curtain. There’s a palpable tension here. He puts his hands up.

Superlek has until 11pm. No wait, he’s going to check again now. Same result.


Superlek misses weight

Constantin Rusu is back for his second attempt at passing hydration. But he fails again at 1.0320.
There are five fighters yet to pass – Superlek, Xei Wei, Yuya Wakamatsu, Walter Goncalves, and Rusu.
They all have around 1 hour and 40 minutes to makes weight and pass hydration.


Rusu retests

Walter Goncalves is back again for his second attempt.
But he fails to pass hydration, recording the same mark again (1.0266).


No luck for Walter

Yuya Wakamatsu comes back for an unofficial weight check. He’s 134.25 pounds, which puts him under the mark.
But the Japanese flyweight will still need to pass hydration.

But he fails hydration again at 1.0292. He sighs deeply as he walks off. He has until 11pm. Deja vu for the Japanese flyweight, who also missed weight in Singapore last November, even after shaving his head.
Is he going to get the clippers out again?
One hour, 13 minutes left.


Yuya fails again

There are fifty minutes to go in the official window for ONE Fight Night 12 weigh ins.
We still have 5 fighters left to pass – chief among them Superlek, who will be headlining Saturday’s card.
Walter Goncalves, Yuya Wakamatsu, Constantin Rusu, and Xei Wei still also yet to pass.
The clock is ticking, gentlemen.


State of play

Constantin Rusu is back with 45 minutes to go.
It’s 1.0214 for Constantin, he passes hydration. He steps on the scales ... 171.5 pounds, he misses weight.
He’s trying again, though, with the curtain. He misses again (171.25 pounds).


Rusu misses again

Xie Wei is back with just over 20 minutes to go.
He is very happy as he passes hydration (1.0229), screaming, “Yes, I passed! F****** hell!” and throwing his shirt on the floor and bounding onto the scales. “Hold steady!” Ric Auty tells him.
He makes weight at 134.5 pounds.
Superlek, Yuya Wakamatsu, Walter Goncalves, and Constantin Rusu still yet to pass. They have 18 minutes left.


Drama for Xie

Yuya Wakamtasu is here in a towel with six minutes to go.
But he fails hydration again (1.0277). He passed earlier but missed weight at 135.5 pounds, and can try to negotiate a catchweight with Xie Wei.


Constantine Rusu quickly follows Yuya Wakamatsu into the room.
He passes hydration (1.0140), then asks for the curtain. He weight 168.75 pounds and makes weight.
Lightweight kickboxing fight with Bogdan Shumarov is on.
Four minutes left.


Rusu makes weight

Flurry of late activity continues as Walter Goncalves comes in.
The Brazilian passes hydration (1.0218) and steps on the scales – but it’s no good. He makes weight at 135.75 pounds.
He can now try to negotiate a catchweight with Banma Duoji. He asks for the curtain, but it’s not going to help.


Goncalves misses weight

Superlek does not come back in, and officially misses weight.
He, Walter Goncalves, and Yuya Wakamatsu all passed hydration but did not make their contracted weights.
They will now try to negotiate catchweight with their opponents. Will the main event be saved?
