ONE Championship’s Angela Lee taking part in suicide prevention walk after launching mental health charity Fightstory

  • ONE’s atomweight MMA queen launches non-profit mental health organisation to ‘empower fighters of all walks of life’
  • Lee says ‘it’s more important than ever for us to stay connected’ and ‘help bring hope to those affected by suicide’

ONE Championship’s Angela Lee will take part in a suicide prevention charity walk on Oahu in her native Hawaii, in association with her newly launched mental health non-profit organisation.

The women’s atomweight MMA champion launched the Fightstory charity last month, to “empower fighters of all walks of life”.

Fightstory will take part as a team on September 9’s Oahu island walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s nationwide “Out of the Darkness” programme.

“Hi everyone, September is suicide awareness and prevention month,” Lee 27, wrote in an Instagram post.

“If you are on Oahu and would like to participate, we’d love to have you on our team for this important cause. See you guys there.”

“These events give people the courage to open up about their own connections to the cause, and a platform to create a culture that’s smarter about mental health,” she added.

“Friends, family members, neighbours and coworkers walk side-by-side, supporting each other and in memory of those we’ve lost. ⁣

“It’s more important than ever for us to stay connected. Register today and help bring hope to those affected by suicide.”

Lee, who last fought in October, is contemplating retirement following the death of her 18-year-old sister and fellow ONE fighter Victoria Lee on Boxing Day.

“The Prodigy” Victoria Lee went 3-0 in ONE after making her debut aged 16 in 2021, and was set to return in January from a 14-month lay-off.

Angela Lee’s brother Christian Lee, who is ONE’s lightweight and welterweight MMA champion, is “100 per cent” set to return next year, according to the Singapore-based martial arts promotion’s CEO and chairman, Chatri Sityodtong.

The 25-year-old “Warrior” last fought in November, when he claimed the second of his titles at Singapore Indoor Stadium with a fourth-round TKO of Kiamrian Abbasov.
Their 17-year-old brother Adrian Lee is also set for another amateur fight next month. Chatri is keeping a close eye on him, and told him “I can’t wait for your debut in ONE”.
The siblings were all coached by their father Ken Lee, who has “completely retired” from coaching, though the family’s United MMA Hawaii gym reopened last month after it “permanently closed” in January.
Angela Lee is set to “make a big statement” on her future in Singapore next month, where she will attend ONE Fight Night 14.

The event will be headlined by a fight for the interim atomweight MMA title between Stamp Fairtex and Ham Seo-hee, who are ranked No 1 and 2 in Lee’s division.

Amir rumours she could hang up her gloves, “Unstoppable” Lee set up her non-profit organisation in July, with the goal to “listen, support, and encourage” people in their “journey of life”.

“It’s taken a lot to get to where we are today,” Lee wrote, regarding the charity.

“Everyone is a fighter, in his or her own right. At Fightstory, our goal is to empower fighters of all walks of life. To share their stories, inspire hope and build a community for everyone to thrive in their mental and physical wellness journey.

“Everyone you know is fighting a battle you know nothing about, so be kind always.

“Fightstory exists to let people know that it’s OK to talk about your mental health. It’s OK to talk about your emotions. It’s OK to share what you’re going through.

“Speak your truth. Share your story. We are a community that cares. We are here to listen, support and encourage you in this journey of life. We are fighting the good fight for mental health and we are just getting started.”
