Freddie Haggerty got his ONE Championship career off to the perfect start at Lumpinee Stadium on Friday, stopping Dankalong Sor Dechaphan in the second round of their strawweight fight and picking up a US$10,000 bonus in the process.

Watched by older brother Jonathan, one of the most dominant fighters on the promotion’s Muay Thai roster, the 19-year-old began his bid to follow in his sibling’s footsteps at ONE Friday Fights 49.

But Englishman Haggerty didn’t have things all his own way against a much more experienced opponent.

They traded low kicks at the start of the fight with a jab from Dankalong snapping Jaggerty’s head back. The Englishman responded with a hard body kick but did not look comfortable in the clinch and ate some knees.

Dankalong looked extremely confident as he walked Haggerty down but with seconds remaining in the round the teenager landed two left hands to the body which seemed to take the wind out of his opponent’s sails.

A clinch ensued, but this time it was the Englishman who was doing the damage, unloading a barrage of elbows and punches from close quarters.
