The latest episode of “Being The Elite” has given wrestling fans their first real insight into the partnership between AEW and Chinese promotion OWE. All Elite Wrestling’s SoCal Uncensored – Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky – flew in to Shanghai last month to visit Oriental Wrestling Entertainment’s training facility. OWE president Daniel Fu and vice-president Michael Nee introduced OWE’s young performers, who had prepared some demonstrations of their hybrid kung fu wrestling style – or “kung fu s***” as Nee put it. SCU were clearly impressed. “Scorpio, he’s been wrestling for 16 years, Frankie’s been wrestling for 21 years, and I’ve been wrestling for 26 years,” Daniels said in front of the OWE performers. “We’ve been fortunate enough to wrestle all over the world. And we’ve seen many schools in the US and around the world, and this school is one of the best facilities I’ve ever seen, and you guys are one of the most dedicated, professional looking groups of students that we’ve ever seen.” Nee told the South China Morning Post that OWE had asked SCU to give their students some lessons and advice. The training seminar was meant to be for 20 minutes, but SCU stayed for three hours instead. “Chris, Frankie and Scorpio told them everything about when they were rookies coming into the business, how they suffered, how step-by-step they became who they are today,” Nee said. “Our kids in China right now, they sometimes have shows with not many people, it’s not a concrete business model yet. They’re young – 17, 18 years old. All the kids their age are going out partying, but they have to be here training every day. They have fears, doubts, insecurities. So that three hours really changed a lot of the kids’ mindsets. “Chris Daniels told everybody if you want to be a wrestler, here’s how to suffer while you’re not famous, how to be lonely training by yourself in the hard times. You feel like you want to give up, but you have to keep training.” “They showed us a bit of their technique,” Daniels said on Being The Elite. “I got to talk to them and let them know what our experience is like, that’s the one thing we have which OWE guys are lacking – just that experience. “But after seeing what they’ve done and the passion they have, their dedication to the craft, I feel they’re gonna be a great, great addition to AEW. “Their partnership is gonna be one of things that makes AEW stand out in the world of professional wrestling.” Kazarian was most impressed with the OWE performers’ hybrid kung fu wrestling style. “It was humbling, mind blowing, very special for me – 21 years in the business, this was certainly one of the coolest things I’ve ever got to participate in,” he said. “What these kids are doing, the kung fu hybrid style, is something that’s gonna blow people’s minds in the US. “Just to see the hunger in their eyes, how motivated and disciplined they are, you don’t see it a lot. I’m on a high right now, I feel blessed to be here with my SCU brothers and be a part of this. OWE and AEW is gonna set the wrestling world on fire.” SCU later performed at The Great World entertainment complex in downtown Shanghai, taking on three of OWE’s young wrestlers, Achilles Ben, Logan Fan and The Lunatic. “The people didn’t really know SCU but they’re performers, their body language is great, and people in audience were crazy about them, they were yelling ‘SCU, SCU’ after the match,” Nee said. “They loved it. It was a great show.” Reflecting on the trip, Sky said it had been an “unbelievable” experience. “I met a lot of great people, got to see how hard they work and train, how serious they are about the business,” Sky said. “It’s inspiring – it makes me more focused, more determined because these guys are coming and we gotta keep up with them. I’m gonna work hard and go home with this new outlook on things. “This is gonna be a great partnership, AEW and OWE. We say it over and over again, we’re gonna change the world.” Before SCU flew home to the US, OWE arranged a field trip for their last day together, taking them 90 minutes out of Shanghai to the 1,000-year-old Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. “Our kids cannot speak much English but we all went to the spa and took pictures, went drinking and had a good time, everybody got together for dinner,” Nee said. “The lessons told by the guys … the kids can see them as their mentors. We really appreciate what they gave to us. “SCU, they loved China, they had never been here before. We took them around and they got to see the people here, the audience. It’s really changed their mind about Shanghai. After they got back they all talked about how great China was, including other wrestlers in AEW. When I was there on May 25 in Las Vegas for Double or Northing, even Kenny Omega and Cody said, ‘Hey, we wanna go and see how it is’. It was a great trip.”
