Less than four months after her horrific crash at last year’s Macau Grand Prix, young German driver Sophia Floersch is back in her car feeling “fit and strong”.

The 18-year-old teenager made headlines around the world after her Van Amersfoort Formula Three car flew off the track at 276 kilometres per hour before smashing a photographer’s bunker during the 63rd running of the Macau Grand Prix. Miraculously, the teenager not only survived the high-speed crash but has come back to do what she loves best, testing her Van Amersfoort at Monza for the first time at midweek on the comeback trail.

She returned to racing after 105 days since her horror crash at Lisboa Bend, which left her with serious back injuries that required 11 hours of surgery in Macau to repair a fractured spine.

Only a few months ago, her future was left in doubt given the severity of her injuries but she’s back in Formula Three and she hopes to continue her ascent in the sport and hopefully end up with a spot in Formula One in future.

“I’ll see how it goes, but my goal is to get to Formula One and have success there and maybe be world champion,” the German driver told the BBC last December.
