Defending Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne is off to a disappointing start this season by his own very high standards, but the motor racing maverick known as “JEV” is dealing with it in his own typically quirky manner.

Things have gone against the Frenchman in season five – he hit out last week at an increasing number of on-track incidents which have cost him positions and precious points, but remains optimistic he can help turn things around starting in Hong Kong.

“That’s part of motorsport, not everything always goes your way,” Vergne told the South China Morning Post. “So you know, as we say in French, ‘I’m eating my black bread’ and it can only get better from here, you know?”

Vergne was in eighth in Mexico City last time out before a massive collision with Nelson Piquet Jnr took him out of the points. He blasted the actions of several drivers in the full course yellow period that was called immediately after.

The 28-year-old also hit out at the number of incidents in races this season, saying it is “not motorsport” and “you don’t see this in Formula One”.
