Staying on the existing Central harbourfront street circuit is the priority for Formula E organisers despite clouds hanging over the future of the Hong Kong E-Prix, after the electric racing series celebrated its 50th race with cake and champagne in the rain.

FIA regulations require tracks to be 2.2km long but Hong Kong, running on a 1.86km circuit in Central, was given special dispensation and will need to extend the track or find another location if they are to stay on the Formula E calendar.

“We hope to find a solution with all parties involved – the FIA, the Hong Kong government and the organisers – as they all want to see the flagship event continue to stay here,” Automobile Association governor Lawrence Yu Kam-kei said.

“The harbourfront circuit is preferred as it has been used for three occasions and we are quite happy with it, but of course we have to fulfil the requirements of the sanctioning body.

“If in the end we cannot come up with a solution for whatever reason to extend the circuit, we will then consider other locations.”
