Briton Stephen Gallacher ended his nine-year wait for a second European Tour golf title in stunning fashion with a three-shot victory at the Dubai Desert Classic yesterday. Gallacher holed his approach to the par-four 16th in the final round for his fifth eagle of the week to shake off the persistent challenge of South African Richard Sterne, who ended in second place. "I'm obviously delighted," said Gallacher after carding one-under-par 71 in the final round. "It's taken a long time but it's sweeter now." Reuters

South Africa made steady inroads into the Pakistan batting line-up after reducing the visitors to 104 for four at tea in their second innings chasing a mammoth 480 to win on day three of the first cricket test at the Wanderers yesterday. All four home seamers picked up a wicket, with only debutant Nasir Jamshed (46) offering any resistance to the South African onslaught. Pakistan passed their first-innings total of 49, losing just one wicket. But the South African bowlers have managed to pick up wickets at regular intervals to stay on top. Reuters
