Eastern launch Hong Kong’s first professional basketball team

Rich club hopes to upset dominance of two traditional teams – Winling and South China in the A1 Division this season, just like they have in soccer’s Premier League

Newly promoted Eastern, the first professional basketball team in Hong Kong, aim to upstage the domestic basketball scene that has been dominated by South China and Winling in recent years.

With millions in cash supporting them, Eastern, are targeting both the cup and league championship in their maiden top flight season.

Eastern’s soccer team is now top of the table in the Hong Kong Premier League with 26 points.

“We come here to win everything,” said club director Peter Leung Shou-chi.

“All our players are training full-time and paid as professionals and, hopefully, other teams will follow suit to bring more new excitement to the sport in Hong Kong.”

Eastern will make their debut in the A1 Division when they take on Winling in the Senior Shield at Southorn Stadium on Tuesday.
