Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton investigated over motorcycle selfies on New Zealand highway
Police say they are investigating whether Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton broke New Zealand law by filming himself with a mobile phone while riding a motorcycle.
Hamilton, who was visiting New Zealand before travelling to the Australian F1 Grand Prix, posted two videos to social media, both taken from close range, apparently showing him riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle on an Auckland motorway.
It has been illegal in New Zealand to use a mobile phone while driving a vehicle since 2009.
A police spokesman was quoted by the New Zealand Herald as saying authorities would “take a strong stance on any activity which places undue risk on the lives on any person on the road.”
In 2010, Hamilton was fined and had his Mercedes road car impounded after doing a “burnout” in a Melbourne street ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, deliberately spinning the wheels of his vehicle and creating a cloud of smoke from the tyres.
