Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag hang on to claim sixth place in nail-biting finish to second leg of Volvo Ocean Race

The result leaves Hong Kong’s Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag in sixth place overall on the leader board with five points, nine points behind leaders MAPFRE

Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag managed to scrape their way off the foot of the Volvo Ocean Race standings after two legs on Sunday when a close finish saw the David Witt-skippered team edge Turn the Tide on Plastic to claim sixth spot in the seven-crew contest.

The result leaves Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag in sixth place overall on the leader board with five points, nine points behind current leaders MAPFRE.

The Turn the Tide on Plastic crew had closed to within just 200 metres of Witt’s team by the end of the 7,000-nautical mile second leg, but the Hong Kong team narrowly managed to hold them off before a midnight finish.

“We’ve had Scallywag in our sights since the equator crossing and that result is not what we deserved. We deserved more, I’m gutted,” said Turn the Tide on Plastic skipper Dee Caffari.

“We lost two miles today to them and then we got it back to a couple of boat lengths. Fair play to our guys to make it happen and that’s why I wanted the result to go the other way.”

Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag eventually crossed the finish line just over a minute ahead of Turn the Tide on Plastic, according to afloat.ie.

“Everyone was good. No one gives up,” Witt said. “We’re solid. We have good character. We have to stick together, keep fighting and get better.”

Leg two winner MAPFRE heads the overall leader board by a single point over Vestas 11th Hour Racing with Dongfeng Race Team a further two points adrift in third place.

Leg three heads off from Cape Town to Melbourne, starting on Sunday 10 December.
