LeBron James watches son Bronny drop first in-game dunk and 27 points on Crossroads School debut

  • Youngster will play with Shaquille O’Neal’s son next year
  • Busy week for James as Klay Thompson calls him and Cleveland Cavaliers ‘bums’ for post-NBA Finals Halloween party, while Kobe Bryant backs Lakers

LeBron James Jnr, the 14-year-old son of the NBA star, impressed on his high school debut in Los Angeles.

The youngster, who goes by the name of Bronny, scored 27 points for Crossroads School in a win over Culver City Middle School, which included a long range three-pointer and a dunk.

At 1.78 metres (5 foot 10 inches), the eighth grader is playing junior varsity and many are already looking ahead to when he will join up with Shaquille O’Neal’s son, Shaqir, a fellow Crossroads pupil next year.

Bronny is not permitted to play on the varsity team this season as he is a freshman.

On a night off after beating the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, his proud father watched the 61-48 victory from the stands and later told ESPN that his pride increased when Bronny switched to his number 23 before the game.

“I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but it definitely made me feel proud,” he told the sports channel after Tuesday practice with the Lakers.

But it has not all been good news.

Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson called out James and his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates as “bums” and “idiots” for their infamous Halloween party in 2016.

The Ohio-based team had made cookie tombstones for Warriors players Stephen Curry and Thompson after losing a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals, the first team to do so.

Thompson told The Athletic: “That was crazy. I forgot about that. Well, look at what pettiness gets you. Gets you 1-8 in the Finals. Idiots.”

The Warriors, who won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, head to Cleveland on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant has suggested that James will bring another NBA title to his former team.

“They will figure it out. They have talented pieces …. So enjoy the journey because we’ll be champions before you know it. Then we’ll just be laughing at all the Warrior fans,” the Los Angeles Times reported him telling fans at a Lakers All-Access Event at the Staples Center.

It’s been a busy week for James, with Nike releasing their video of his “More Than An Athlete” summer tour around the world.

The tour was to inspire young people and took in stops in Shanghai, Paris, Berlin and New York.
