Hong Kong swimmer Siobhan Haughey overcame a disqualification in the 2019 NCAA Div I Women’s Championship to help her University of Michigan team finish third.

Haughey was disqualified in the preliminary race during the 200-metre individual medley last Thursday for “taking a second butterfly kick on the pull-out of her breaststroke leg”, according to an article in Swimming World.

Haughey also addressed the DQ in an interview after the championship, noting unofficial video appears to show the swimmer beside her committing the infraction.

“It wasn’t what I was expecting, and I don’t really think it was a fair judgment, but I can’t really control that. I know our coaches tried to argue against it. But it is what it is.

“I knew the best thing for me and the team was to move on and focus on the races that we had – and we had some great relays.”

The 21-year-old said the disqualification, which took place at the University of Texas in Austin, ended up having a silver lining.
