British boxer Amir Khan was defeated by America’s Terence Crawford in their WBO welterweight title clash at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night.
An “accidental low blow” to Khan’s groin in the sixth ended the contest, with the Briton deciding that he was unable to go on.
The win extends Crawford’s unbeaten record to 31-0 while Khan is now 33-5.
Khan was dropped with a left in the first round after turning his back on Crawford and that set the tone for a tempestuous fight.

The Briton had got back into it after the early setback but Crawford showed his versatility when he switched to a southpaw as Khan established his jab. But the contest ended in the sixth after a low blow.
A tweet from British broadcaster Boxing on BT Sport showed the judges had the fight going Crawford’s way when it ended – 49-45, 50-44, 49-45.

The Nebraska boxer, number two on Ring Magazine’s pound for pound list behind Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko, was the heavy favourite before the fight despite it being his first of the year.
Crawford, 31, was defending the WBO welterweight belt he won last June from Jeff Horn and retained in his first defence against Joseph Benavidez Jnr in October. 
The fighters headlined the card at the Garden in the first joint venture pay-per-view event between Top Rank Boxing and ESPN.
Khan won silver for Great Britain at Athens aged 17, winning his first world title at light welterweight, against Andreas Kotelnik, five years later.

A decade on the 32-year-old was fighting his 10th world title fight and looking to win at another weight division, welterweight.
Crawford had already done this, collecting all of the light welterweight titles before moving up to take the belt from Horn. He is now 13-0 in world title fights.
Khan lost heavily to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at middleweight in 2016 and then took two years off before returning to the ring last year.

The Briton had won his last two fights – against Samuel Vargas and Phil Lo Greco – but they had been seen as insufficient preparation for Crawford.
Khan had been given some credit in the media for choosing to fight Crawford instead of fellow Briton Kell Brook.
Crawford was the 12th world champion Khan has faced.

In the co-main event, lightweight Teofimo Lopez beat Finland’s Edis Tatli. The Brooklyn fighter knocked the Finn down with a strong right hand to the body in the fifth before celebrating acrobatically.
The win takes the 21-year-old to 12-0, 11 KOs, and has many lining up as the next fight for Lomachenko.

Earlier another rising star, featherweight Shakur Stevenson, beat Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz in their contest. The 21-year-old Olympic silver medallist won by unanimous decision – 100-90, 99-91, 98-92 – to extend his record to 11-0. The one-sided victory had been booed by the crowd for failing to go for the knockout, diminishing Stevenson’s claim that his fight should have been the co-main event.
