  • Haughey, 21, is seen as one of Hong Kong’s medal hopes next year for Tokyo 2020

Hong Kong’s top swimmer Siobhan Haughey won her semi-final in the 200m freestyle and looks in great form heading into the final at the 2019 Fina World Championships. She will compete in the final on Wednesday night in Gwangju, South Korea.

Haughey won her heat with a time of 1:55.58, beating Yang Junxuan of China and Penny Oleksiak of Canada. Haughey is seen as one of Hong Kong’s medal hopes next year for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo when it comes to the 200m freestyle.

One of the top swimmers in the world, American Katie Ledecky, withdrew from the 200m because of illness. She released a statement via the US team director noting it was purely on “medical grounds”.

Raised in Happy Valley, Haughey recently graduated from the University of Michigan, with a degree in psychology, and was named one of the school’s Big 10 swimmers.

Haughey owns a number of Hong Kong and meet records and reached the semi-finals in the 200m freestyle at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
