New Miami Marlins GM Kim Ng, the first female to take such a role in Major League Baseball, met the media on Monday at her first press conference in South Florida.
Ng greeted the press to tell them of her plans for the team and her journey to making history, not only as the first woman but the first Asian-American and the first of Chinese heritage.
In a 56-minute Zoom press conference at Marlins Park, the team’s home stadium, Ng covered a wide range of topics alongside Marlins president and former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter.
One of those was why she had not been hired as GM earlier in her 30-year career.

Ng had interviewed for the role at least six times with the LA Dodgers, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres.
Reporters asked if her presence on the shortlist was so owners could claim they were hiring from a diverse pool of candidates. Ng agreed.


“Yeah, there were times where I felt like the interview wasn’t maybe on the up-and-up,” she said.
“But I will say that just by having my name out there was a source of hope for people. And so you do it because you know that you just have to keep your name out there.”
She later elaborated on the journey and the obstacles she faced along the way.

“In terms of resistance and pushback, I think I’ve been able to win people over fairly quickly. Obviously, over the last 10 years in terms of interviewing for the general manager’s jobs, it hasn’t come to fruition until now.
“It’s a tribute to the idea that you just have to keep ploughing through. That’s what this is. It’s like what you tell the players. You can go mope and sulk for a few days, but that’s it. Then you have to come back. That’s what I’ve been able to do and, yes, I’ve been defeated and deflated numerous times, but you always keep hoping.”

Hope has been a theme of the response to Ng shattering the glass ceiling in MLB.
“People are looking for hope,” Ng said. “People are looking for inspiration and I’m happy that this is a part of it.” She has taken on the role not only of GM but as inspiration: “There’s an adage: You can’t be it if you can’t see it. Now you can see it.”
Ng has been widely congratulated and she mentioned the number of messages she received since being named as Marlins GM on Friday.
“The last 72 hours have been extraordinary for me,” she said. ”I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to see the outpouring of just pure joy for a lot of people. As the day unfolded, I was able to zoom out a little bit and realise just what was going on and how much impact this was having over social media.
“It made me realise that it really was a glimmer of hope and inspiration for so many, that if you work hard and you persevere and you’re driven and you just keep going that eventually your dream will come true. I got calls and text messages from guys that I’ve known over the years who were just so excited to tell their daughters and wives.”

Ng mentioned a tweet from her childhood inspiration Billie Jean King and another Michelle Obama as standing out.
She also thanked her family for their support and the fearlessness of Jeter to hire her, telling that she celebrated her appointment with her mother and four sisters. Ng’s mother was born in China and their has been interest in the news from the mainland.
“Apparently I have a small little fan club in China,” she said.
That is just one element of the scrutiny that Ng finds herself under, which she likened to moving a 10,000-pound weight from one shoulder to the other.
“You’re bearing the torch for so many,” Ng said. “That’s a big responsibility, but I take it on.”
