Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah created history on Tuesday night as she became the first woman to do the “double-double” defending both titles as she added 200-metres gold to the 100m gold she won three days ago at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.

Thompson-Herah retained the 200m crown she won in Rio five years ago with a blistering run of 21.53 seconds in the final, a new Jamaican record. She steamed home ahead of Namibia’s Christine Mboma, who produced a barnstorming run to take silver in 21.81, and USA’s Gabrielle Thomas, who grabbed bronze in 21.87.

The 29-year-old Thompson-Herah’s fierce rival and compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce could only manage fourth place to cap a disappointing return to action at Tokyo 2020 for the 24-year-old veteran, who was bidding to improve on her second-place finish at London 2012.
Although the Jamaican always seemed in control of the race, it was a spectacular run from 18-year-old Mboma, who set a new under-20 world record as she motored through the field to grab Namibia’s first medal of Tokyo 2020. The silver is the country’s first medal since the great Frankie Fredericks took home double silver from the 1996 Games in Atlanta in the 100m and 200m.
