Hong Kong’s Chiu Hin-chun has eased into the semi-finals of the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, posting the fourth fastest time in Tuesday’s heats.

Competing in the men’s lightweight single sculls, the Olympian clocked a time of seven minutes, 0.39 seconds to finish just outside the top three in Heat 2, enough to secure one of the 12 semi-final spots on Thursday.

Austria’s Julian Schoeberl posted the fastest time, winning the second of three heats in 6:54.46. China’s Gu Jiantao, making his international debut, crossed the line second in 6:56.43, with Ireland’s Jake McCarthy just 0.22 seconds behind in third.

Mexico’s Alexis Lopez, who came home in 7:11.79, was the only other rower in the heat to reach the semi-finals.

Reigning under-23 world champion Halil Kaan Koroglu of Turkey was also in impressive form, crossing the finish line first in 7:01.04. All five rowers in the third heat managed a place in the semi-finals.
