Hong Kong men’s lacrosse coach optimistic about future generations’ potential to succeed

Samuel Chow Tsz-hong left a teaching career behind to chase his dreams of lacrosse success with Hong Kong, and one day he hopes those he is now coaching replace him in the men’s senior team.

The 24-year-old took charge for the first time at last weekend’s Hong Kong International Lacrosse Sixes, leading a youthful squad to a fourth-place finish, the city’s best performance yet at a tournament involving some of the world’s best players.

Chow is not done with playing, however, and will return to action on the pitch at the 10-a-side Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Championship in New Zealand next week.

But even though he still enjoys playing, Chow knows whatever happens, coaching is part of his future.

“Facing strong sides such as Japan and Germany, we know there is still a gap in ability, but every match is a valuable learning experience,” Chow said. “This team is very young, most of them only started playing in university but their progress is visible. We are on the right track.”

A former education and biochemistry major, Chow picked up lacrosse during his time at the University of Hong Kong.
