Hong Kong fencer Cheung Ka-long opened his account for the season with a men’s individual bronze medal at the Turin Grand Prix on Saturday.

The result came less than two weeks after Greg Koenig, the city’s foil head coach, said no one should worry about Cheung’s condition, and the two-time Olympic champion went all the way through to the semi-finals before losing 15-9 to American Nick Itkin.

The left-hander finished No 19 and No 21 at World Cup appearances in Fukuoka in December 2025 and Paris last month, and has reached the podium only twice in 12 competitions since winning Olympic gold at the Grand Palais in Paris 18 months ago.

Speaking through social media after the Turin bronze, Cheung said that his “mental and physical state” had been fluctuating since the Paris Olympics, and “I’ve experienced many new challenges”.

“After several months of rest, reflection and adjustment, I’ve finally been able to gradually regain my familiar feeling in the last two competitions.”
