Mat Fraser threw a bucket of kerosene onto the rumour mill during his latest appearance on the “JOSH MAT SEVEN” podcast which he has been doing regularly with fellow CrossFitter Josh Bridges and filmmaker Sevan Matossian.

Matossian, who acts as the de facto host, wondered if someone could take a year off CrossFit and return to the same level of competition. Fraser was adamant that it could be done.

“I think if you take a year and let yourself go, and all that, yeah you’re probably fighting an uphill battle,” said Fraser, who retired in February after winning five-straight CrossFit Games titles.

Fraser added the “blanket” argument that no CrossFit athlete would be able to come back after such a long hiatus doesn’t work, and that some may be able to do it if they approach it right and it was “100 per cent possible”.

“This whole thing of nobody can take a year off and come back, shut up, you don’t know, did you survey every single person? Did you test every single person, no, zip it … I’ve done way more for way less of a resentment.”
