CrossFit Games 2022 results: Tia-Clair Toomey, Ricky Garard top leader boards after day 3

  • Australian five-time champ Toomey moves into first place overall for first time this week with three strong finishes on Friday
  • Garard wins ‘The Capitol’ and finishes third in ‘Up and Over’ but poor performance in ‘Echo Press’ allows his title rivals back in

Tia-Clair Toomey finally finds herself in a familiar position atop the women’s leader board at the 2022 CrossFit Games after a gruelling day 3 in Madison, Wisconsin, while Ricky Garard extended his advantage in the men’s individual competition.

Three events were contested on Friday – “The Capitol”, “Up and Over” and “Echo Press” – with the Australian five-time champ finishing in the top three in all of them.

The 29-year-old Toomey opened up a 44-point lead over nearest challenger Mallory O’Brien of the US, who had claimed top spot through the first two days of competition, moving into first place for the first time this week as she bids for a historic sixth title.

Toomey was third in “The Capitol”, the fifth overall individual event which saw athletes begin with 20 Pig Flips at the Allianz Energy Centre, before taking a 3.5 mile run to the Capitol. Once there, they performed a 200-metre farmers’ carry with Jerry bags, and a 200m Husafell carry down State Street, finishing on the steps of the Wisconsin State Capitol building.

Gabriela Migala finished first in 33:34.67, with Laura Horvath second in 35:02.72 ahead of Toomey, who clocked 35:11.29.

Tia-Clair Toomey waves to the fans at the 2022 CrossFit Games on day 3.

In the sixth individual event, “Up and Over”, athletes completed three rounds of 12 muscle-ups, 25 jump-overs, and 30 GHD sit-ups, then an 84-foot weighted lunge.

Toomey dominated and took top spot in 11:58.92, almost a minute clear of second-placed O’Brien, who finished in 12:58.91, with Emma Lawson trailing in third in 13:29.56.

She then solidified her advantage in the seventh individual event, “Echo Press”, which saw athletes alternate calories on the echo bike and 10 block handstand push-ups. Toomey settled for second place in 7:45.28, more than a minute behind winner Alexis Raptis (6:41.18). Emma McQuaid was third in 8:01.72.

Toomey’s overall points total stands at 697, with O’Brien second on 653 and Canada’s Emma Lawson third on 650.

On the men’s side, Toomey’s compatriot Garard is now on 681 points, with American defending champ Justin Medeiros staying hot on his tail 25 points back. Russia’s Roman Khrennikov is third overall on 635 points.

Garard got off to the perfect start, winning “The Capitol” in 31:54.47, ahead of Khrennikov (32:01.47) and Travis Mayer (32:16.22).

He then finished third in “Up and Over”, clocking 13:17.76 behind only winner Saxon Panchik (12:40:00) and Medeiros (13:09.31).

But Garard allowed his title challengers to close the gap on him in the “Echo Press”. He trailed back in 28th place, with Khrennikov third in 7:02.22 and Medeiros fifth in 7:29.07. Will Moorad won the event in 6:30.15, with Jayson Hopper second in 6:57.82.
