Boat owners across Hong Kong held their breath as Typhoon Mangkhut smashed into these shores. But as the dust settled, one club seemed as badly affected as any.
The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s boat house in Middle Island was relentlessly battered by winds and waves until eventually the metal doors were torn off. With nothing stopping the waves, they smashed into the boats, ripped up the concrete gangway and hurled bits of it into the building, breaking most of the coastal rowing boats and outriggers.
But, the club members have rallied around the destruction and just under 40 of them immediately volunteered to help fix the mess, with more expected to join in the effort as the week goes on.
