With 3.2 million Instagram followers and 931,000 YouTube channel subscribers, Australian social media star and bodybuilder Calum Von Moger might be the most famous person you’ve never heard of. The 30-year-old grew up in a town in central Victoria, Australia with five brothers and sisters on a tiny farm. At eight years old he moved to the coast in what he described as a “rascally” childhood. According to his website, the place where he grew up “undoubtedly helped shape his mindset on discipline and he learned to place a high valod and nutrition.” When he turned 14, Von Moger and one of his brothers began weight training at an old warehouse with rusty iron barbells and dumbbells. He made a name for himself online with his chiselled physique after his friend came into a GNC workout supplement store he was working in when he was 23. His friend “had this idea of making a little motivational workout video” and it “kind of blew up”, Von Moger said in the 2019 biopic about his life titled Calum Von Moger: Unbroken. In 2019, he became the first bodybuilder to land a modelling campaign for luxury brand Gucci, and his YouTube and Instagram videos are known for his childlike, playful stunts which includes jumping off high areas into water and playing pranks with his friends. Injury The three-time Mr Universe winner saw his fame and fortune come to a screeching halt when in 2018 he suffered a second left bicep tear while rappelling down a cliff in Australia. The first time he tore his bicep was while working out at a gym, trying to curl 400 pounds with a weightlifting buddy for a video. The accident also saw him rupture his quadriceps tendon and dislocate his knee cap. His training came to a halt and he subsequently lost 50 pounds of hard-earned muscle as a result of his misfortune. The injuries are detailed extensively in his biopic, which is available on Netflix, where he recounts trying to gain back the weight after so much time off from working out at the gym. Steroid use In an October 2019 video posted on his YouTube channel, which has more than 1.6 million views, he admits to using steroids at different parts of his career. The video, titled “My take on steroids” recounts how he started working out at 14 and trained naturally for six years before taking steroids. Von Moger said he started taking steroids first at the age of 21 to help take his bodybuilding career to the next level, and that even though his mentor at the time suggested it, he “made the decision myself”. Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayal His uncanny resemblance to Austrian megastar Arnold Schwarzenegger landed Von Moger a part in Bigger , a movie that was critically panned and a box-office flop. However, Von Moger got rave reviews for his portrayal of the action movie star. In reviewing the move for RogerEbert.com, Glenn Kelly gave the movie two stars out of five, but lauded Von Moger’s performance, and “not to mention his spectacular approximation of the icon’s accent”. Kelly said he also delivered some “comic grace notes” in his portrayal of the former Governor of California.
