Action Asia Events half marathon gets government approval for June 26 but racers must be fully vaccinated

  • The event will be the first large scale trail race since April 17, when Action Asia held the HK50 on Hong Kong Island
  • Director Michael Maddess says the government has required that all participants who enter must have had two doses

Local race organisers Action Asia have received approval for its third event this year, however it came with an even bigger stipulation than the previous two.

A half marathon race in Sai Kung, to take place June 26, has received government approval, but all racers must be fully vaccinated to enter. Distances for the race will include 13km and 21km, which encompasses both trail and road terrain.

Action Asia director Michael Maddess said he had been given the green light for 500 participants, the largest this year, and the race would kick off with “wave starts” in which racers are staggered from the starting line to adhere to social distancing regulations.

“With many in Hong Kong staying indoors, not going out, not exercising like they used to, we hope this will give them a vote of confidence to get outside and cheer them up a bit,” said Maddess.

“It will be some time before events ever get back to the way they use to be, if that ever happens, but let’s all be positive and make the most of this to help us move forward.”

Maddess previously got approval for two races in April, and said the course will follow the 13km Action X Sprint course with additional distance on High Island Reservoir for 21km with full course details made available soon.

The previous two Action Asia Events the government approved required racers to get tested 48 hours before the race, and also adhere to various social distancing regulations. The number of racers was also heavily capped for each race.
