Summer is here and that means long, hot days under the Hong Kong sun.

This also means trail runners need to take extra precautions, especially if they have a canine friend. Hong Kong trail runner Leslie Van and her dog Juno have found some quality trials on Hong Kong Island that are perfectly suited for people and canines alike.

“My first obsession when I go out with Juno is picking a route which has water points such as streams, rivers, public toilets, reservoirs, beaches and is not too exposed, especially on summer days,” said Van.

Chamelia Suhra, who regularly takes her dog Indy on hikes, said it is important to make sure your animal is well trained, well fed, well hydrated and well-equipped. She said it is also important to make sure you have a dog that is built to tackle tough terrain.

“(Indy) is a crazy runner,” said Suhra, “especially on trails. On the cooler day, running half of Hong Kong Trail is no problem for him, but I think he is born to run.”
