Thrilled Chinese users have lit up social media with fervent reactions to China’s victory over the US team in women’s volleyball on Monday night.
The Chinese team clinched their first win at this Games by toppling the defending champion US team 3-2. They surged ahead with a two-set lead before the Americans rallied to even the score. This triumph marks China’s first victory over the US in women’s volleyball in 20 years, dating back to the 2004 Athens Olympics.
On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, the hashtag “#ChineseDefeatedUSInWomen’sVolleyball” rocketed to the top of the trending list overnight, amassing more than 100 million views and 69,000 posts.
“It’s the Olympics! The tension was palpable! Every point was hard-fought. After three years, the women’s volleyball team has finally made their return,” one user wrote.

Chinese star volleyball player Zhu Ting delivered the final blow at match point, clinching the round at 15-13 and earning widespread acclaim.
