A mystery lifeguard in floral swim trunks has stolen the limelight during the women’s 100-metre breaststroke heats after he “rescued” United States swimmer Emma Weber’s cap.
During a pause, the unnamed hero seemed to appear out of nowhere.
Sporting floral trunks, he approached the pool and casually dived in before resurfacing with the cap in his hand to thunderous applause from the crowd at La Defense Arena in Paris.
The moment soon went viral on social media, with an NBC Sports commentator speedily dubbing the man “Bob the cap catcher.”
“Not all heroes wear capes,” one X user quipped, adding: “Some wear floral print Speedos.”
In a statement shared with CNN, a representative for the Paris Olympics confirmed that lifeguards are often the go-to personnel for retrieving foreign objects from the pool, as they are already wearing swimming gear.
