Reigning Horse of the Year Werther showed his class to take out the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m), the final Group One of the Hong Kong season.
While punters followed Joao Moreira to make stablemate Eagle Way the even-money favourite in the HK$10 million feature, the second elect Werther proved superior.
Basic Trilogy get an even tempo up front, spreading the seven-horse field out in the middle stages but Hugh Bowman had Werther perfectly positioned in third, sitting on the heels of two-time winner Blazing Pass.
Bowman made his move on the turn and that was all she wrote, with Werther holding off Eagle Way to give trainer John Moore the quinella with Blazing Pass coming third.
The win atones for last year’s narrow defeat and gives Werther a serious chance of defending his Horse of the Year title, having now sewn up the Champion Stayer award, this win combining with his success in the Group One Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup (2,000m) in February.
There was a huge upset in the other feature at Sha Tin with rank outsider Lucky Year winning the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m).
While Magic Legend and Mr Stunning were the two favourites, neither finished in the placings as the 88-1 shot delivered young South African jockey Callan Murray a major result in just his third Hong Kong meeting.
The Danny Shum Chap-shing-trained five-year-old kept fighting to the line, holding off a wave of horses, including placegetters D B Pin and Thewizardofoz.
